I'm a smart girl. I'm a senior in high school, and my whole life I've slacked off in school but managed to get good grades at the end. I filled out some college applications last month, and I noticed that I had a LOT of trouble motivating myself to do the essays. It got to the point that I ended up submitting a horrible application, 2 minutes past deadline, to one of the schools. It's not like I don't want to go to college.. I know what I want to do with my life. I want to be a dentist. I've always promised myself I'll start working hard in college, but as it's getting closer, I'm starting to get really afraid that I won't. I mean.. I can't even motivate myself to go out and run regularly or to go and practice my tennis serve (the courts are literally a 5 min. walk from my house). I really want to change but I feel so set in my ways. Help?

Set in your ways? At your stage in life? Fail now, miss the boat now and you'll be left behind for good.

Most people need the occasional kick up the butt to help them on the way, and everyone needs to be cheered and encouraged.

When ever you make a promise to yourself never say when, but enact it straight away. It is like this, what's gone can't be recalled, and what's to come is not certain, so all that's left is now.

Like the little old lady said, 'I've a few chores to do and a rest to take, so I'll have the rest first so I don't miss it.'

As for motivation, you have to find what works for you. Nothing happens just by dreaming about it. You have to live your dream. If you want to see how that is done, take a trip to your local dance studio and watch the professional dancers practice. The blighters just don't stop. They're at it all the time in the studio and out: I wouldn't wonder if they don't do it in their sleep. A little bit of an obsession helps

If you want to go to a good college, they will be particular in their choice of student. Everyone who dares to apply will have good grades, they will be looking for that bit extra, that hunger to suceed, that willingness to contribute, and they won't have the wool pulled over their eyes.

If you are set in your ways don't go to college, because one of the first things you will have to learn is to unlearn all the mistakes and misconceptions you have picked up so far because that is the way that knowledge advances.

Finally don't talk this problem over too much else you end up in a pity party. You need action, not sympathy.

Here's wishing you all the best.

I'm exactly the same way. Perhaps the combination of the lack of challenge in schoolwork and the fact that people often told you that you are gifted has made me more lazy than you would be otherwise. You're used to sailing through tests, so why try? But honestly, if you don't try and get some kind of degree you will find yourself working a crappy job with low pay. I ended up dropping out of college the first time I attempted to go. I went back at 28 years old and am getting all As now. I still just barely get As. I only complete just enough work to get by. You've got to make yourself change. Set goals for yourself that you will turn in every single assignment. Do something, it would be a shame to waste your intelligence.

I am the same way. What helps me is to not dwell on it and for me to remember that all I have is now. I don't have the future or the past only the present. I then just do the things that I need to get done. I will tell myself that I will do something tomorrow, then tomorrow comes and I put it off another day. Until it finally kicks me in the #ss. But when I do things now, I am less stressed later down the road. Another thing that helps me is if I make a daily list of things that I have to do. I will put them on a notecard and try to see how much I can accomplish the next day. If I don't get all of it done, I don't beat myself up. I also try to enjoy the things as I do them.

That's a trap many talented and gifted people fall into. And it's why the tortoise beat the hare in that race. Those who have to work hard to get ahead in life will probably be happier in the long run. Those who just coast by because they can never feel the joy of mastering a challenge. So, you'll have to set higher standards for yourself. Don't go for the pass grade, push yourself to get first-class.

Will you really be happy to go to bed, clutching the brass ring when you know you could have had gold?
