I currently owe a collection agency 87.00. Earlier last year I decided to fix up my credit and pay everything off. I contacted this Agency over a dozen times and no one could seem to locate my acct. They gave me several attorneys numbers, but they also couldn't find it. And all of a sudden it started updating negatively on my credit report. Last month I called again and she then gave me another number to an attorneys office. He told me that he has had my acct since Sept of this year and that I had to pay almost 300.00 or he would sue me. He was so rude and arrogant I had to eventually hang up the phone on him. They kept passing my acct around from person to person when I am the one that contacted them to settle the matter. I don't think that I should have to pay extra because I was actively trying to locate the acct before it got this far. What should I do?

Inform them (in writing) that you want them to send you a written notification of the total payoff amount BEFORE you pay anything. Don't waste your time with phone calls - they don't protect you.

I had the same problem, I was told I owed for a cell phone bill, never at that time did I ever have a cell phone. But I was buying a new truck, so I went to the Cell phone provider that told me and tried to pay and they had no record went back to the truck dealership and explained that they didn't have a record of it and they finally passed my credit for a truck loan. Well the other day I get a letter from the cellphone place and called the 1-800 number provided and they can't find it.
I was told to ignore the letter, that it was sent to a wrong address, well it has my name, my first name is very unusual, so I too don't know what to do now.

Maybe I don't understand your term collection agency, to correct your credit record and pay off your bills. That would be the last place I would go to get any help as you stated you wanted, there are companies that will and can help you make the corrections without involving anymore people than what you have to.. These people aren't helping or doing anything to help you out, unless there is more to this story than what you are telling. You're going to have to pay this agency the $87.00 for whatever services they were involved what, but before making payment ask for documentation of what they have done, before you make payment. From what you have said there are alot of people that don't know how to communicate with you, but want to charge and cause you more problems that what you need right now.
You might have to hire an attorney that you can depend on to support you in what these people are trying to do to you.
Remember from this day forward if you haven't done it yet, document everything you have done, the people you have spoken to, places you have gone, dates, times, names, everything that you might have to look back to.taking place.
GOOD LUCK- remember it's not over until it's over, and you're at peace with yourself and everyone else involved with your debits
