The only American thing about christmas is 'santa claus's' red suit, developed by Coca Cola. Father Christmas or Saint nic existed in christmas mythology long before america existed. But hey, Americans can't point to their own country on a map. Hey ho.

Typical; then according to the film industry of course God is an American. Seriously Christmas was celebrated long before even the Vikings went to America and long before even Columbus ventured there (accidental of course) and the earliest known Christian Hymn "Hail gladdening light" was written in the third century. The first Christians didn't even arrive in the Americas until the 15th Century. So how could Christmas have invented by the Americans when it was celebrated centuries before the Americas were discovered and the native Americans converted.
But as usual they want to be first, well this time they are not.

Interesting point.
America has certainly 'hijacked' Christmas culturally - just consider the widespread image of Father Christmas reinvented by the Coca-Cola company sometime between the wars.
In some ways I think this is no bad thing. Although it is now a little too commercial for my liking, it is far more fun and interesting than the dour European affair of the 19th century and before.

Christmas? An american tradition? Pull the other one it has bells on it.
America hadn't even been discovered when pagans in Europe were celebrating it. And at the time it was called Yuletide, not christmas. It was the Winter Solstice..Dec.21st.
The suns birthday.

Ha what a load of bollocks! The only American thing about Chrismas is the turkey and the cranberry sauce, which tastes like kak anyway! I prefer a goose at Christmas, the real English tradition!!!! Even though I am from SA my family insisted on it., ja, at the height of summer too!!!! Anyway, Americans would have you believe that they invented or are responsible for just about every last damn thing in the universe! I remember one telling me how America was the world's first democracy....

I think what they meant was that Christmas is a tradition celebrated in America (if you disagree with me then take a drive to your local mall and see if they are ready for "Christmas") ...not that it began here.

They were a Christian tradition, a German tradition, an English tradition, etc, etc.
Our founders were predominantly Christian as have been the vast majority of our leaders. Hence, it is a national holiday and an American tradition.
