I need to have Windows XP for some home based work I do - but currently have Vista, which came with my fairly new Dell. Should I
1 - dual boot Vista and Xp
2- buy a copy of XP and just run with that.
3- OR??
** The copy of Vista that I have is the proprietary version that comes with a new Dell computer, already installed but with the recovery disk.
I'd love your input. I'll definitely be taking the computer and software to someone who knows what they are doing but just tryng to figure it all out.

chances are, you'll have to buy the xp disk. dual boots are sometimes troublesome. besides it should a little better with only xp. take it to a local tech, in an hour it can be done, a second hard drive is handy too.

If you have to do this with just the one pc, you want to either dual boot, preferably with a 2nd hard drive, or you want to use VMWare to have Vista open a virtual pc within it, and that virtual pc would run XP.

Note, Dell does *not* void your warranty if you replace Vista which was pre-installed with XP or any other OS. They simply won't provide tech support for the OS you put on.

If at all possible, I would recommend a pc with XP on it dedicated to your home based job. As someone who hires people for at home work, I am always hesitant if someone *only* has one pc and they use it for my work as well as their own personal stuff. Just my opinion - Good Luck whichever way you go.

Best thing to do is just buy a XP cd and just run it. It will easily erase windows vista and it will reformat the hard disk for you as well. dual boot is kind of annoying. Stick with the Xp cd. it shouldn't take you more than an hour with the cd. it took me less than 40 minutes to install on my laptop.

You'll probably want the dual-boot, as if you format the computer and take off Vista, to boot XP on it, you will loose the warranty on your computer, if you still have one. Otherwise if I were you I would get rid of Vista all together has it's junk.

The question is how big is both hard drives, you may want a bigger hard drive, what I would do is back up all my files on a dvd, re install vista home basic and make (1 hard drive) and then install vista ultimate upgrade and you can put your files back as needed, but if the drive is too small I would definitely buy a bigger hard drive
