My table has a large vase with a fabric wrap and tassel that I put fresh flowers in weekly according to the season. I also have a glass art piece and two very unusual arty votive stems. The lower part of the table is where I keep my "coffee table" travel and art books from where we have been. And always, coasters! Very arty and decorative ones. Have some fun with it. It's always changeable. Look at room design books and get some ideas that work for you.

I suggest visiting some furniture sites and searching for coffee tables. Look at the pictures of the coffee tables because most places show the tables fully decorated. You can get ideas from there. Start off looking at http://www.potterybarn.com

A nicely decorated wood box with carvings. You could keep a few photos in it to share with visitors. Just remember to keep the proportions of the box right for the coffee table.
Or a leather bound copy of a dictionary.
You could out put a bowl of fruit or possibly nuts as they keep longer.
A wooden bowl of pine cones is nice to scent the room with pine.
For the holidays a bowl of shiny ornaments looks nice.

Carpet bowls: round porcelain balls, decorated or plain. Set a group of 3 on your table.
Hand-thrown pottery dishes (small) full of interesting pebbles, marbles, etc.
Small interesting figurines in terra cotta.
Plastic dinosaurs, you can arrange them around the table. That sounds dumb but a LOT of adults are drawn to them and will end up walking them around the table during conversation!

Well have your thought about a small matching bouquet of flowers. You can also try a "ceramic" fruit bowl placed on a nice table mat, preferably floral.

Someone already used my answer so just pretend this is the first time you have seen it. Your Feet. Get it? "what do I put on my new coffee table?" and I said "your feet". Now that's funny.

Put pictures on it, digital frames for them look stunning, buy stylish costers for drinks, no body likes grape-juice coloured dark walnut. I can't send pics, I don't know your email.
