I have a Sony XBR2 LCD which unfortunately does not display th x.v.color spectrum. So far it is not an issue because DVDs and Blu-Rays are not encoded with the x.v.color gamut, but I do know that at some point in the future the XV will become the norm. So, basically what I am asking is, when will my TV be "useless". (I realize that I will still be able to view movies and such, but it sucks that I would be missing out on the Blu-Ray's potential of deeper colors.)

You are confusing deep color (more bits per pixel) with wide color gamut (ability to display more colors).
You are correct, xv.color needs a CLOSED system - Camcorder captures in xv - You record in xv - and you playback in xv. Your TV will not be useless for quite sometime. Movies are created and broadcast in Rec. 709 and many color scientists believe that xv.color is one of the greatests frauds Sony was able to pull off. So, I would not worry too much.
