You are already seeing some of the positives that can come from this tragedy. You have found something important that interests you!
I can suggest an excellent book about cancer by the American Institute for Cancer Research called: "Stopping Cancer Before It Starts". It is available through Amazon.com for as little as $4.00 plus S&H.
You can also go to your local library - they will have a large collection of books on cancer.
You can also use the internet. Start with the NIH (National Institutes of Health), American Cancer Society, and Center for Disease Control (CDC) websites. They offer a lot of quality information on all aspects of cancer.
Best wishes and good luck.

There are over 200 different types of cancer and just as many subtypes. However, cancers are often separated by age group. Thus, the girl in your class passed away from leukemia which is a form of cancer more common to this age group. You should know that it is rare for teenagers and children to get cancer. The type of cancer that teens often get are considered childhood cancer and often are associated with the primitive cells found in children.
The most common types of cancer that teens and young adults can get include:
1. Leukemia - affecting the blood
2. Lymphoma - Hodgkin's disease or non-Hodgkin's
3. Osteosarcoma - bone cancer
4. Ewing's sarcoma - bone cancer
5. Skin cancer - Melanoma
6. Soft tissue sarcoma - Rhabdomyosarcoma
7. Germ cell cancers (testicular or ovarian cancer)

There are many types of cancer. Cancer is often named after the part where the cancerous cells originate. For instance, if cancer starts on the skin, then it's skin cancer. Cancerous cells can spread throughout the whole body and it becomes difficult to treat. Early treatment can help.
Hence, it is a good idea to learn what are the warning signs of cancer. When anyone notices these signs on themselves, go consult a doctor. Read this article to find out more

First off, I am sorry for your loss. That is an awful thing to happen to such a young person.
As far as types of cancer, I would suggest that you go to WebMD and look. There are many types, that can affect any part of your body.

Wherever the cancer shows up, it's named for that area. Cancer is just when the white blood cells cannot fight off illness anymore, and/or red blood cells cannot bring oxygen to the body and carbon dioxide out of the body like it did anymore. To fight cancer, they do radiation.
