Batteries intended to be used up then recycled or discarded are "primary". Batteries intended to be repeatedly used and then recharged are "secondary".

The regular alkaline battery that you buy at Walgreens is a primary battery. There are rechargeable alkaline batteries available, but they don't work very well.

The best rechargeable alkaline battery is the nickel-iron battery, invented by Thomas Edison. It can withstand conditions of abuse that would destroy any other rechargeable battery. Unfortunately, potassium hydroxide is a very unsatisfactory electrolyte (because it absorbs CO2 from the air). So it hasn't been very popular.
