It is used around Lancashire - I heard it in Manchester, in my childhood and people around Lancs / Oldham have heard it but it is very localised. Can anyone shed any light

This has been asked a couple of times before but those queries weren't answered. The best I can do comes from Eric Partridge's 'A Dictionary of Slang'. He says it is mid 20th century army (I expect that's British Army) slang. He describes it as a general intensifier, e.g. "more XXX than Soft Mick".

I have never heard the phrase in conversation so I imagine it is regional, possibly Lancashire. There are only a thousand or so Google hits for it and most of those are for queries asking what it means.

Yes, it is a dance, but she's definitely flirting with you in a very cute and sweet way. She's waiting for you to respond with a question like "Is there some other way of keeping warm you would recommend?" BTW, she's a keeper.

"Soft shoe" is basically tap dancing without the taps. It's a milder, softer version of tap dancing. Heh, glad you asked this. I'd hate to think what might happen if you assumed it was an innuendo!
