I have never lived in Melbourne but visited plenty of times, so can't help you on where to live, but for house prices check out http://www.realestate.com.au

Can also look at Victoria - http://www.liveinvictoria.vic.gov.au for lifestyle and regions there.

The 'where to live guide' is community profiles for Australian residential suburbs http://www.where2live.info - may come in handy for you.

Adam,
I would say Berwick is the better of the 2.
It has expanded a lot in that area the last 5 years.
New roads, schools and shopping have been added.
It is one of metropolitan Melbourne's fastest growing areas.

With the new Freeway just been completed it is an easy 40 minute drive into Melbourne Central Business District.

it offers the best of both worlds. Close to the city yet on the back door step of some of the most beautiful countryside here.

Hope this helps

Craig

if you're in the UK you're familiar with Australian "suburbia" through Neighbours, yes? Wheelers Hill is suburbia - in fact it's not that far from where they film Neighbours!
In peak hour, W.H. will take about 45 min to drive to the city. Berwick is a little further out and little more rural... probably take an hour or so to drive to the CBD from there in traffic.
Both areas have good schools, low crime rate (Melbourne crime rate is generally pretty low anyway), and most people in Melbourne are pretty friendly. If you're happy with the 'burbs, then your selections are both not bad.
However, if you want to spend a little more, the inner eastern or south eastern suburbs may offer you a better lifestyle - try Camberwell, Canterbury, Hawthorn, Malvern, Glen Iris, Caulfield, Elsternwick, Carnegie, Brighton, Sandringham. All of these suburbs are within 12 km of the centre of Melbourne and offer great lifestyle, excellent schooling, friendly neighbourhoods, close to public transport, great real estate growth potential but are all much dearer that WH or Berwick.
Good luck with your choices and I hope that you enjoying living in Melbourne - it's great.
