I have a 2 year old puggle. My boyfriend has a pomchi (pomeranian/chihuaua) that is about to turn 2. I started bringing my dog around slowly and they seemed to get along. Now that my dog is here all the time, my boyfriends dog constantly bullies him by biting his legs and jumping on him. This causes them to wrestle around and fight. My dog thinks he is playing so they aren't hurting each other, but it is annoying and Im afraid they could hurt each other because my dog is way bigger than my boyfriends pup. What is a good way to train my boyfriends dog to stop biting my dog because smacking him and yelling hasn't worked and I don't know what else to do?

to whoever left the crappy comment... I NEVER STATED THAT "SMACKING AND YELLING" was the proper way to fix the behavior. I said those are the things i've tried and they haven't worked so before you try and quote someone and then scold them. get your f***ing facts straight you douche!

Redirect the dogs by calling them, tossing a ball, or whatever. Once you have their attention ask them to sit and then feed them really good treats. Anytime you think that the dogs are going to start up, interrupt the behavior and ask them to do something else.

But I'd say that if your dog is not being aggressive and causing the other dog to yelp or be hurt, and your dog seems to enjoy the wrestling I wouldn't worry too much. Watch them for awhile and see, is your dog responding to being bitten and provoked, angrily, or does he seem to get into the game? When your dog has the other dog pinned down or is jumping on it, does the other dog look scared or act afraid? I have a 50 pound dog that plays with a 14 pound dog. If he gets too rough, she let him know. Dog play can look scary sometimes so make sure that there's really a problem. Sounds like they could really give each other some good exercise.

Are they neutered? In any case, there's a big difference between fighting and playing. Sounds to me that you're dogs are playing, but the play also serves a purpose - determining who is dominant.

If your boyfriend's dog is the dominant one, then you need to respect it. Picking up your dog and coddling it will only make thing worse for you dog.

They're little dogs and can't really do much damage to each other. They'll work it out and you need to respect it or you'll just make things worse for your dog (everytime to don't respect the heirarchy, the pomchi will try to re-establish the heirarchy).

The allternative is to find a new boyfriend with a dog wimpier than pomchi, but chances are any guy with a dog whimpier than a pomchi is gay.

this is just pack mentality its completely okay! i have a mastiff and a shih tzu and they play all the time some people think their to rough but its completely fine now if the smaller dog is actually getting hurt and I'm not talking about it has a high pitch bark runs away and hides for 5 seconds but actually is getting hurt like bleeding than i would position you hand into a spider form and nip at the dog in a fast motion saying "shh" make sure you let the dogs know who is boss and your the pack leader and all should go well!

Since when is this, as you state, the proper way to take care of ANY behavior in a dog?

If the biting and roughhousing isn't getting anyone hurt - leave them alone, they're fine. It is just play and the smaller one will let the other know if it has gone too far. My golden retrievers play with a shih tzu and some corgis and no one ever gets hurt. Dogs play bite, growl and wrestle in play - it's good sign they are getting along.

Flyswatter. You can smack it on a table and make that noise or smack the dogs and they WILL pay attention. After a while all you will need to do is bring it out so they see it and they'll behave. I love my flyswatter.

Please be careful. My mother just had one of her dogs attack and kill the other one, after they had been living together nine months! Supervise them, and when you cannot supervise them, separate them.
