Adobe reader is used all the time and that's why it's on your computer...the reason it needs to update is for security patches that are needed to keep your computer safe from hackers.

Adobe is a software company that makes lots of different products. They may Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc. The message that you are getting however is likely for Adobe Reader. That is a program that allows to you open and read PDF files. If you don't want to get the update message, open your Adobe Reader (Acrobat) program and deselect "automatic updates".

As was said before, most likely you have the Acrobat Reader installed, and this may be the reason, why you find Adobe on your harddrive and why it is trying to install updates. However, the Acrobat Reader takes up way too much space on your harddrive and is way too slow. I suggest to get it deleted completely and install "Foxit" instead. It is a small program and very fast - I've been using it for a few years and never encountered any problems: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
