I went to an electronics store and the cashier forgot to ring up a $200 item. However, this item was not the most expensive thing that I bought... I ended up buying $1,000 worth of other stuff with the credit card. (Darn black friday!) Should I drive back and have the cashier ring it up?

It would depend on how far. I mean its not like you tricked her into not ringing it up. Plus the crowds. I am an honest person, but if I had to get in traffic and long lines, too bad I would just keep it. However if you want you could keep it and when you know that you will be going back to the store you could call the manager and let him know the situation and then pay for it at that time, but that is just a suggestion if it gets on your conscience.

Look at your receipt carefully, and see if it didn't come as an accessory with something else.

I would go back the next day early in the morning or late in the evening, bring your receipt, and tell the manager what happened.

This is a lot of money. $10 somehow, but $216 with tax--that's a bit too much and way out of line, and just looking at that item will make you feel a bit funny. I say return it, and if you can't afford to buy it's ok. God bless your heart.

If you go back then they will look at cameras and fire the cashier who waited on you. If they notice its missing, it wont be for another month when they do inventory check so they wont even know how it disappeared. If you want to get the cashier fired, go ahead. If its some company like best buy or walmart, they can afford the loss and they are doing far more greedy things then you are by choosing to buy from countries like China that are anti democracy and helping pour more money into their economies so it can hurt ours and our way of life once theirs takes over.

Christmas time is coming up. Imagine if you were that cashier and had kids etc and just got fired before Christmas. People make mistakes and it will hurt the cashier alot more than it will hurt those evil corporate people.

that depends upon what type of person you are. if you're the type of guy who can't sleep at night knowing you have something unpaid for in your posession, then you could just return to the store and calmly explain to the cashier or manager that you didn't mean to steal it, but the cashier forgot to ring it up. I'm sure they have encountered this minor problem before, and on Black Friday, this must be very common, as most stores are usually thrown into utter chaos. good luck!:)

That's a tough one! I have struggled with that before, although the items were never that expensive. I usually tell the cashier, if I realize while I am in the store, because otherwise I would feel bad about it each time I look at the object. I guess it boils down to whether you can live with your decision or will you feel guilty it.

Yes. Some places have the cashier make up the losses out of their pay. But even if they didn't how would you feel if they charged you too much or didn't bag the item you paid for.
Personally I try to be honest both ways. "Honesty is the best policy", yep it is.

Keep it. There's no guarantee they'll be all nice and understanding when you go back. That happened to a friend of mine with a pair of jeans and the store totally flipped out and called mall security on her for "stealing" them. Not that I think they'd freak over some pillows and towels and whatnot, but you never know.

I go by this rule... if it short changes the actual cashier (like she gives you extra change) then i always give it back - if the store will only show it as shrinkage (missing item) then i dont worry - but i have never had it happen with a 200$ item

I used to react almost automatically and bring it to the cashiers attention whenever this happened to me. But life has made me more cynical and the last time it happened I ignored it and walked away with a free dress for my grand-daughter.
However the downside of your "free gift" is that you have no receipt and therefore any guarantee could be void.

I think you should before the poor cashier gets in trouble. Perhaps they will view the cameras and see her mistake.
Please return it obviously you do have a heart because you aksed the question. : )
