very dependent on the puppy and size/breed.

Pediatric spaying requires the pup be 2.5 lbs. (I think some vets do it at 2 lbs now) and this type of spaying is done (in CA by law) by shelters and rescues to meet legal requirements.

In some large/giant breeds, they like to let the long bones mature prior to spay/neuter, and this can be well over a year; 18 months or so.

I personally do not handle giant breeds so the long wait does not effect me. I try to spay/neuter as early as possible, but ALWAYS get advice from the veterinarian. My vet does do pediatric sterilizations so he is not partial one way or the other, rather, he (or she) makes the call based on THAT dog, the breed, size, overall health, with an eye to the orthopedics of the dog (puppy) etc.

I am a huge supporter of young spay, but there are times when the dog needs to wait.

A puppy can be spayed at the age of 4 months old.

That would be up to your vet. Some vets do it as young as 8 weeks, and some do it later. My little dog (schipperke) was showing in confirmation, so I couldn't spay her until she was done. She was six when her got spayed, and it was harder on her than it would have been a younger puppy. I had a GSD that was spayed at 8 weeks, and she was perfectly fine the next day. So young is better, but as far as how young is up to when your vet says they are willing to do it.

Thank you for being responsible and spaying her.

it all depends on were u got the dog and the health of the dog and if it came from the shelter or not , some shelters will spay them before u adopt them and others will give you a voulcher to use at ur vet and my excperiance working at a vet clinic we do not spay or neuter a dog or cat before 6 months old , they have to be 6 months old , and we wont spay a dog that is in heat either cause it is more complacted to do and risky for the dog its self meaning loseing alot more blood .but if your vet is sure about 5 months all vets do it different . keep us posted

They (vets) recommend approximately 6 months of age as a guideline. For females it is usually best to do so before they reach sexual maturity and go into heat. Going into heat can be a messy and difficult time if you do not plan on breeding the dog. Ask your vet for their advice that is specific to your puppy.

The earlier the better, it is easier for the dog, recovery is very fast, 4 months or even earlier, depending on the weight and size of the dog, but even small dogs can be safely neutered by 4 months or sooner.

Please do NOT wait until the dog is 6 months or older, that's just plain dumb - by that age most females are in heat and can easily get pregnant by oversight.
There is no reason to let males establish spraying or dominance issues either by letting them get sexually mature.

Far better for you and your pet to have him/her neutered/spayed before sexual maturity.

It really depends on your vet's preference. We spay at 12 weeks at our shelter. Some vets will do it a bit younger and some a bit older.
