It's called a profanity filter, it's for people who get offended, and for younger children. However I have seen children swear more then some of the adults on the board.
I have nothing against swearing, however there is a time and place for everything. Intelligence has nothing to do with it, I don't see how that can define a person's character.

Hey Peter P. , I'm sure you already know the answer to your question and are cleverly eliciting dialog. Good job, it worked. Just to state the obvious the "stars" are to mask the offensive language. It' a clever way to curse without actually cursing. Most people rely on swear words to emphasis or enhance a point, display anger and/or pleasure. Those that consistently rely on swear words is prob. due to the classic..lack of vocabulary scenario. Nonetheless, Peter, whatever the reason you are quite right when claiming it's offensive. To avoid being offended so easily we must realize that when we venture out into the world at large, such as the World Wide Web, we will encounter many strangers that exist under a mask of anonymity. These strangers may at times be very crass, predatory, and most likely offend your sensitivities. We must venture forth with tougher skin and not internalize the offensive. Allow your PC screen to do double duty. 1. A window to the world. & 2. A screen disallowing the bugs that sting from entering

Other people do it and to quote them is offensive and probably against the Y! Answers terms of service. So stars in swearwords it is. Also it is difficult to convey emotion just using text so I for one use this sparingly in my answers.
And as for turning into a nation of illiterates - we are not quite there yet. I propose a buddy system - where sometime who is classed as illiterate is paired up with sometime literate to show them the way.

Times change and so do customs. Swear words are used to express different feelings and emotions now much like !!!!!! is used to express excitement. And people dont "put" the stars in there....the filter on yahoo answers automatically adds the stars. If someone types a curse word, they dont see that theres stars there until after they click "submit" and yahoo answers automatically replaces it with stars. You must have lived a very sheltered life if it offends you so much. I dont care cuz I have a cartoon mohawk and I can spell "because" as "cuz" cuz im illiterate too.

asterisks are used in swear words mainly by uneducated individuals who never learned how to spell. They are especially useful when a person does not have a clue what they want to say, as, for instance, ****. ****, or ****. No one can argue with that string of invectives. Actually, my mother used to say that the use of profanity was proof that an individual was uneducated. She suggested that if you were interested in using profanity, you would be better served by learning enough command of the English language that you could express the same emotion or frustration using anatomically and physiologically correct language. There was one exception, of course- something about ****** ** ***** *** ******* ******!

The stars are automatically inserted by the website if it detects a word in its database of rude words.
Some "clever-dicks" get around this by inserting their own symbols. They're just as ridiculous though.

I perosnally swear because to show my agression - for example if answering a question about a person cheating on their partner I would use the term a stupid bi*ch/b*stard instead of stupid person, the former has much more of an impact. Sometimes only swear words will do!

I'm perfectly arituclate but sometimes a good f*cking swear makes me feel better and it's just something that most people do. It's not a big deal get over it.
And I would also like to add to the smart ars*s that I am educated and work in the legal profession and you should hear the cursing from most lawyers.
... and the person who gave me a thumbs down can **** right off

It's not a star, it's an asterisk. It's an accepted way of protecting the innocent. If you are so pure in mind, how do you know that the 'stars' represent swear words?
