My german shepherd is about 7 months old & he has had diarrhea for a couple of days now. He seems fine he still plays & runs around like normal but his feces is a little runny & he isnt as hungry lately. Is it normal for a dog to get diarrhea from time to time?

It is common but it does indicate a problem either serious or not. Some dogs get diarrhea from their food, others from stress, others from something more serious. I would be concerned about lack of appetite since healthy dogs are usually very interested in food. 'Going off their feed' is a common sign that something is up.

You can try Libby's canned pumpkin (plain, without sugar) which helps both diarrhea and constipation but if this goes on longer and is really runny then it is worth a trip to the vet especially if his appetite is off.

You need a different vet! When a dog has diarrhea for a day, and isn't eating the next day, it is getting dehydrated. I would go to an emergency vet if you have to, but there is probably another vet that can work her in today if you explain the problem. She could be dead in four days if she ate something bad or got parvo or something like that at the dog park. It is possible for dogs that have had all of their shots to get parvo, and the sooner it is treated the better chance your dog has of surviving. She needs fluids, and she needs a vet ASAP! I can't believe a vet would tell you to wait four days - he must be on vacation or something, and he obviously does not give your dog the quality care she needs. Find a vet that you can depend on - and please do it right after you read this! Okay, I just read your new information, and since it isn't real bad like I thought it was, the second vet is probably right, so I don't want to scare you. But to make sure, be sure she is drinking water, if not she does need to go to the vet. I still would not go to the first vet again, you need someone dependable for her. You can try feeding her boiled chicken or hamburger and rice. Rice will help her digestive system get back to normal and chicken is probably the best choice of the two. The main thing is to make sure she is drinking plenty of water. If you have pepto bismol tablets, you can give her half of one, twice a day, but it might be better just to let her get whatever it is out of her system, and stick with the chicken and rice diet for a few days. Hope she feels better soon, and sorry, I was afraid of the symptoms that you told the second vet she does not have the first time you posted the question, because those are signs of parvo. I like that the second vet seemed more concerned with her exact symptoms, and think if I were you I would switch to that vet.

I agree, it's never normal. But dogs DO get the runs every once in awhile. Some dogs can't handle the animal protein in certain dog foods. If you feed him table food, that could do it, too. He might have eaten something that didn't agree with him. Dogs that age are always getting into the trash, etc. He may have grabbed something off the ground while you were walking him and you never even saw him.
I'd watch him. If he has diarrhea for another day, still doesn't want to eat or his behavior changes/worsens in any way, it'd probably be a good idea to take him in just to see if he's OK. He could have a parasite or he could have gotten into something that is making him sick.
It's a good idea to look at his fecal material and see if there is anything in it. The vet will probably ask you what it looks like.

Although puppy diarrhea is pretty common, it's not really 'normal' as it's usually a sign of a digestive upset or illness.

It can be caused by something as simple as eating something he shouldn't (like Thanksgiving leftovers!), a change in his diet, or a case of intestinal worms, or even illness.

If he's still acting fine, and running around it's probably not a serious illness. If it gets worse, or he starts to vomit/appear lethargic then you need to take him to the veterinarian.

Usually its because of something they ate that is to different from what they usually eat or its too strong for their tummy. Make sure your puppy drinks plenty of water and if you are feeding them anything but dog food you might want to just do dog food for a week or two. If that dose not fix the situation you might want to see a vet!

it's never "normal".

see the vet. your doggie may have a dietary issue or perhaps has a parasite or protozoan which is causing this.

some dogs seem to get stress-related runs, and I have a GSD that will reflect stress this way from time to time.

some dogs will also get it when diet is changed ever so subtly or from eating something in the yard. your pup may have a sensitive stomach.

better to be sure... see the vet.

It's quite common, but it's not 'normal', any more than it would be normal for you to keep getting diarrhoea. What are you feeding him on? See a vet.
