Do a Charlie Brown Christmas tree - a branch from a tree that has lost its leaves - you can probably find a fallen branch - spray paint it if you like, but I would leave it natural, and decorate it with homemade decorations. Learn to make paper cranes for example, and make cranes using fancy Christmas paper. You can probably find books at the library with directions for various Christmas origami decorations. String cranberries and popcorn to add to the decorations. Add red and green ribbons, whatever you like to make a festive touch. Have fun.

One year, I took all of the jewelry I owned and hung it on the tree. Look around at what you already own and turn stuff into ornaments. I've used teacups, harlequin dolls I collect, fans I collect, pinecones from the yard, silk flowers, bows I made from recycled gift ribbons and one year I took all of the Christmas cards I received and hung them on the tree.

You can get a medium sized tree, and cover cardboard boxes with one color wrapping paper and hang them from the tree for a mod look. You can also put silver tinsel on it, and if you're really feeling adventurous you could even spray paint it.
