That God created the Heavens and the Earth IN THE BEGINNING. Later on, he creates Light on the first day. So heaven and earth were around before the First Creative Day. I just had that pointed out to me. Anyone care to argue? (first read the first verse of Genesis, and then answer. Really, it is quite interesting).

John: The Universe creation is just summed up in one sentence. The creative days talk about the Earth.

So the ONLY light in the universe comes from the Sun?

I'm not sure I understand your question. Yes, in the beginning the universe was created - the heavens and the earth. The heavens include all celestial bodies, and that includes the sun and moon.

The Genesis account then begins to describe further creative activities on the earth as well as the preparation of earth for habitation.

"The Hebrew word rendered “make” in verse 16 is not the same as the word for “create” used in Genesis chapter 1, verses 1, 21, and 27. “The heavens” that included the luminaries were created long before the “first day” even began. But their light did not reach the surface of the earth. On the first day, “there came to be light” because diffused light penetrated the cloud layers and became visible on the earth. The rotating earth thus began to have alternating day and night. (Genesis 1:1-3, 5) The sources of that light still remained invisible from the earth. During the fourth creative period, however, a notable change took place. The sun, the moon, and the stars were now made “to shine upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:17) “God proceeded to make” them in that they could now be seen from the earth."

Maybe Genesis is less about geology and more about God's hand in the physical and spiritual world. Maybe we should be reading it for what it's trying to tell us about the relationship between us, God, and the creation (mainly that it was intentional, good, and an expression of divine creativity), and the responsibilities implied.

My opinion? The order isn't that important. Go feed somebody - and bring them a coat. It's cold out.

The verse states that God in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The phrase "heavens and earth" is a Hebrew idiom referring to the entire physical universe.

The first verse is like a summary statement. And the following verses provide more detail regarding how God created the universe.

Cordially,

The sun was not created until the 4th day yet there was light on the 1st day. The sun is not the only source of light in the universe. The sun may have existed from the 1st day, but only appeared or became visible (as the mist cleared) on the 4th day. We see light on a cloudy day, even when we can't see the sun.

yeah, i remember when i first noticed that and asked, couldn't heaven and earth have existed for a millenia before God said let there be light?

that would give support to the whole rebellion in heaven thing and the fall of lucifer.

but i second guess it now, just from studying bible numerics. the days of creation speak infinite wisdom, God was demonstrating greater things than day cycles.

Hey, who knows how long he was floating over the waters. Surfing is fun.

I thought he spends day 1-3 messing with earth, creates everything else in the universe outside of earth on day four (must have been a busy day), and then fiddles with animals and man.

According to some Bible scholars, they believe that God created all things in the first verse, then Lucifer fell and ruined the creation, then from the second verse on, God began reshaping what was ruined.

You are right.

The earth was there already when God started preparing it for life. So the earth can be as old as scientists think it is.

The Bible does not mention how old the earth is.
