I don't do them myself, but I have seen positive effects when applying my energy to healing.
As far as doing a work, I was taught that to be effective, one needed to hold a merged state in order to connect to the Divine, and a focused state to apply that energy to a purpose. Excitement and nervousness would actually interfere with an effective work.
Of course, to my mind, a work is for the purpose of helping. When helping yourself or another, the overriding principle is "harm none."

My spells work most of the time, and I can't help but wonder about the authenticity of those who say they work ALL of the time. I mean, can you honestly say you have NEVER had a failure? I have been a practicing witch for over 40 years and will say my spells work about 98% of the time. No one is perfect. And of course I learn from the ones that don't work.
The only thing going through my mind the first time I cast a spell was the intensity of the spell. I was neither excited or nervous, it was and is just a part of being.

All of my spells have worked. The ones that don't work don't have enough energy put into them or they are written by someone other than the spellcaster.
The first time I cast a spell, I was very nervous simply because it was something new to me. But the more experience you get, the less nervous you are. Eventually, after you get the hang of it, there's no nervousness or excitement at all. It's just something that you just calmly do.

Oh yes, all of them work, just not always the way you expect--those backfires and miscast spells on bewitched and charmed are a pretty accurate depiction of what can happen when you dabble with stuff you don't understand--except it takes more then thirty minutes to fix a fuddup spell in real life
My first spell, I was extremely cinical--thought it was nonsense and couldn't possibly work--thought I'd believe it when I saw it

It's your belief in them that make them work, not the spell itself. I use creative visualization and also automatically manifest my thoughts so I'm use to wild, wonderful experiences in my day. I just shake my head in awe sometimes, knowing not many except a few close to me would ever understand.

I was raised in the craft so it never made me feel nervous, I just thought of it as normal. Most of my spells work. When the few that as failed happened I just thought it was for the good.

Spells don't work for Witches or Christians.. it's just wishful thinking... now there is power in words mind you, and if you recite an incantation or cast a spell and you believe it enough to TAKE action to bring about it's achievement, you may well have success... but the action works without the spell or prayer..

My opinion is if you put enough faith and energy into anything you do it will happen to one degree or another(positive energy of course).
I did a candle lighting a few months ago and it worked for as long as we needed it to.

Yes...
And my "first time"? Well if you're nervous, you're not ready. If you're excited, I wouldn't trust you with an athame. I was feeling perfectly calm more than anything.
You should try asking this in M&F, because not many "omg demons" idiots hang out there.

I think anything would work if you put energy into it.
