It's impossible to say. It depends entirely on your cats structure, etc. Best is to ask the vet.

I am really glad, though, that you are interested in keeping the cat at weight. It will add considerably to the cat's long-term health. Obesity in cats is a huge problem and can result in life threatening diseases and disorders.

I personally suggest a canned diet of a quality food and no open feeding. Cats don't drink much water, and canned food helps to keep kitty properly hydrated which is an issue in cats. The old adage about dry food keeping the teeth clean is just that. All cats need to have dental cleanings regularly. This prevents bacterial damage to the cat's organs and also keeps the teeth and gums healthy.

There are many good cat foods out there, and here are a few:

Wellness (the chicken and rice is excellent. you can find it by putting in your zip code here:

there is a little spot on the right, in yellow, about 1/2 page down to locate a seller near you. Get the large cans v. the regular small cat cans as this is cheaper. A pet store can order it for you this way if they sell the brand.

Felidae
Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul
Innova

A few to avoid: ANYTHING sold in the grocery. It is all junk and by-products and is loaded with carbs. Cats are 100% carnivores, so meat / fish proteins should be the basis of their diet... not by-products.

Good luck!

There's no way to say without seeing the cat. Could you post a picture, with someone in it for perspective.

Average cat weight is said to be 3.5-4.5kg (7.7-8.8lb). However there is such variety in size, even amongst moggies, that this is only a very vague guide. Most cats are extremely overweight at 15lb, but I have met 15lb cats who aren't fat at all, just huge cats! Similarly, your cat could be overweight, or he could just be a biggish cat.

A good food plan is to get a high quality food (i.e not a supermarket brand) and feed the recommended daily amount for your cat's ideal weight.

Deciding whether a cat is overweight or not goes more on shape than weight. You should be able to feel, but not see your cat's ribs when you run your hands down his side. Put your hand on his belly - it should feel nice and tucked up, you should not have a big handful of round belly there! There should also be an obvious waist. Take a look at this diagram for ideal, under and overweight cats:

So you see, it's a bit complex!

I've had experience with a 15 year old, 16 year old, and 17 year old cats. Most of cats I know die young due to urinary tract problems, backed up bladder. In all truth sounds like you're doing everything right. The fifteen year old cat and seventeen year old are both still living, the 15 year old has a small case of kitty Alzheimer's and the 17 year old has nothing wrong except a little overweight. The sixteen year old was had to be put down due to some problems other than age. So keep them going.

Having two 15 year olds is pretty good. We have a cat shelter, no kill, and our cats have forever homes with us. The oldest we now have is at least 17 and may be older because he was acquired as an adult, followed by two 16 year olds. Our Pangur Ban lived to almost 21, and Spade made 20, and our Bootle kitty almost made 20. Sounds like you're doing a great job caring for your cats.

I three grown cats, and they all weigh between 10 and 14 pounds. Depending on the size of your cat 10 - 15 pounds I believe is typically the norm. 10 Pounds for smaller cats and larger ones rought 14 to 15 pounds. Depending on the breed, some can get up to 18. However, if yours is a typical American Shorthair, 10 - 12 pounds is good.

It depends on the body structure of the cat, whether he is large, medium or small. Just knowing the weight, we cannot assess whether he is a healthy weight. A guideline: You should not be able to see ribs, but he should not have a huge belly or stomach pouch. You can ask your vet to assess his weight.

Xander = 10 months = 8 pounds
Mindy = 3.5 months = 3.5 pounds
Miss Mindy is looking to be a big kitty, Xander might be as big as he is going to get.
Depends on your kitty's frame.
