A big part. The rest is intellectual failure. Both parts make it detestable.

Actually, a natural part of faith is fear. Faith produces a tension between the comfort of the familiar and the challenge of the unseen. Whether you trust God will determine what you do next -- whether fear becomes an insurmountable obstacle, or merely a hurdle along the way.

Many 'fear' what they do not know. Those who first search the truths of Christ fear Him, until they understand the attributes of His character.
Then, we are told, perfect love (understanding, appreciation) replaces fear.
Fear of receiving our just rewards can be a motivator to put faith in something that can save us from what we deserve.
Understanding Him replaces fear with faith.

Fear is brought about by lack of understanding, on any subject.
Know your God have faith in your belief and in yourself and you will have no fear.
Fear should play no part of Gods love for us.

God doesn't give us a spirit of fear. In fact, fear is the instrument that satan uses to control peoples' lives....The fear that God speaks of in the bible is more of a reverance or awe...Fear God for He is able to cast both body and soul into hellfire. Also, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. This fear is more of a respect, such as the respect of a father. He is our Heavenly Father.

Most of it. Since we are taught by our pastors to fear God, along with the afterlife scare, most religious people keep their faith simply out of fear. They want to go to heaven and avoid going to hell.

Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
-King solomon, the Proverbs.
it doesn't mean to quake in your boots over God... to fear Him is to always consider Him and enquire of Him, to bow before Him and revere Him because you're too fearful of what you would do in your own conceit. whoever fears Him the most, loves Him the best.
