Typically, the under 21, single male is rated by the industry to be the highest rated class, and it's STATISTICS and NOT based on YOU, in particular, but the over class of "under 21 year old, single male."
It pays to shop around as not ALL insurance companies have the same rate. Look in your local phone book and find yourself a LOCAL independent agent. Just look for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and you should be able to find a professional agent that can help you shop for lower rates.
I might also help to be insured on your parents' auto policy, here again, depending on the State and your particular situation.
Shop around - you'll be glad you did!
Good luck, drive responsively and I hope this helps!

The main reason for these lofty premiums is that young male drivers are seen as very high risk customers for insurance companies. They are assumed to have a higher exposure to alcohol and illicit drugs; are more inclined to overcrowd their vehicles; more likely to drive irresponsibly, and consequently more likely to be involved in an accident. Although this isn't necessarily something you can change, you should be aware of the effect it can have on your premium. When calculating your insurance, your insurance company will look at the area you live in and price your premium accordingly. They will consider the crime-rate of the area to give an idea of the chance of your car being stolen or vandalized. They will also assess the traffic-density of the area - heavier traffic flow means you're more likely to be involved in an accident.
But remember that drivers who do not make any claims are rewarded with cheaper insurance costs eventually.

you are young and inexperinced and will have a higher chance of having an accident. and the car is expensive. driving to school means a football could hit the windscreen mirror or something like that and you will claim. so they put it high for you. you will need a smaller cheaper car.
