I own a mixed breed dog she never barks or growls at anyone but yesterday when we went on our walk we stopped at a creek where a gentleman whom i know was and she began to growl and bark after him. She got really angry. As i said she has never behaved that way before and I am concerned.
She usually play with strangers. Does anyone have any ideas.

I should add that i found her early in January this year and she has never acted this way with me , my family or anybody else just yesterday with this one guy. I will take your advise and avoid the guy because something isnt right for her to behave that way.
Thank you for your answers thus far.

Dogs have their own personalities...like humans. They also have their likes and dislikes...like us. There are times when something just doesn't agree with a dog. It could have been his outline (if he wore a hat, coat, etc.) Your dog could have smelled something on him (my dog always barks at this really cracked out looking lady...I really think he smells something strange about her...probably all the drugs she uses leaking through her pores.)

I wouldn't be concerned. Your dog was just alerting you that she did not feel right about something, and warning that man that he needs to keep his distance.

As many previous people have said, dogs are great at judging people. It could be some sort of scent that this individual has, or the clothing. Did the individual have as said before a hat or hood on. A friends dog barked at me the first few times she saw me with a hood, and this is after a year of knowing her.

Did the man in question show any signs of recognition. You said you knew him, but has your dog ever met him before. Is there any chance that he may have hit her at any point in time including before you got her???? An abused dog will react negatively towards someone who abused them. Where you knew him, has she ever heard the two of you yelling at each other. If so she would want to protect you.

Did he have a fishing pole or anything that might appear to be a "danger warning" to her.

Depending how well you know him, if he is not a close friend that you know well, he may give off negative feelings that she picks up. Could he be an nasty person or could he simply be afraid of dogs. Did he stare at her in the eyes which often dogs pick up as a challenge to their place in the hierarchy of the three of you. (Is she more of an "alpha" female?)

These are reasons that she may have acted the way she did. Trust her instincts unless you figure out, it was simply the pole for example that he may have been carrying, other wise I would steer clear of this individual, especially if she is not with you!!!

As another answer said. Dogs are good judges of character and so be cautious around that person. And there is a chance that he had the smell of something on him from the creek or area and the dog could smell it. Dogs use their noses for more than we know. He might have brushed again a bush that had a smell on it.

And the dog, might have been protecting you, because that's her job.

Yes listen to your dog, that guy might not be in good intentions towards you or the dog. Maybe who ever had her first was cruel. Good Luck, animal instinct is very strong and reliable. Just don't let her bite him, or anyone or they can make you destroy her. Good Luck, very smart pup!

It sounds like a fear based response to this fellow. If she begins to display this behavior to more strangers check out

www.fearfuldogs.com to learn about helping her be less fearful of new people. Your dog may have been taken by surprise by this guy or sure, he may be especially creepy.
