Awhile back, I heard what sounded like a child singing outside(kind of a monotone "ne ne ne ne ne ne ne" sound), but when I looked out the window, I was surprised to see that it was actually a cat. He had his head bowed, and a circle of other cats had formed around him with the same somber expression and stance. What does this mean? This was not your typical "mating call".

It's possible they were just communicating to one another.
I know sadly when one of my cats got hit in the road the other sibling sat there and cried or sang till he went mute. They could be moaning, hungry, or any number of things. If they didn't sound in pain though and no one was fighting it maybe fine, just a really odd and interesting experience to see.

I would think this was a lady cat with a whole bunch of males about to fight for her! Mating calls vary hugely, but they always sound weird.

They were getting ready to fight. I love the different sounds they make. I'm still laughing about the LA LA LA then YAK. my cat does that too but I've just never seen it written down and its funny.

My cat sings LA LA LA LA LA right before he throws up. Sounds grose, but sometimes cats make weird human like noises!

Ooh that sounds kind of eerie!

Maybe they really are out to get us humans, but until they figure out how, they are going to pretend they are all really cute and cuddly. keeping their friends close, but their enemies closer ;) You just caught them at a meeting when they least expected it!

I swear my kitties are plotting against me. sure, they are all purrs and cuddles now... but i see right through them :)
