Hi..I have a 5 year old male budgie, he's been by himself the whole time except for once when we tried to put a female in there. They HATED each other and were seperated. He has been alone since. He always looks in his mirror, so I am wondering , do you think he would like a friend, or not, since he's been alone for so long? I was thinking of trying a male with him. do you think he will accept another bird, or hate that it gets as much attention as him?
Thank You

what you have to do is :
1. take the mirror out of the cage
2. get the new (male) bird and put him in a cage next to the other one( you can borrow one for 3 days)
3. when you see they are talking to each other through the bars of the cages, you cam let the new bird into the other bird's cege.
if you have a male and you dont want babies, GET A MALE. trust me.

I had a number of budgies growing up, and I found that if you do decide to get an addition to your cage mate, the best thing I found was to slowly introduce them to each other. Having him by himself for so long has ingrained a solitary life in his mind. If you do buy another budgie, keep in in a seperate cage but not too far from the cage with your first budgie (not right next to it as they may try and fight through the cage). Let them socialize and chitter with each other for a couple of months, and then put the cages close together. leave them like that for a month or so and then place the cages so that the doors face each other, and leave the doors open (so the birds can travel freely between the two cages.)).
You should find after a while that they prefer one particular cage.
ta da! :)

If he gets a lot of time with people, he may not need a bird. Five years old is middle-aged for a budgie, so if he's been happy so far, keep things the same.
If you want to get him a companion, I'm pretty sure he would enjoy having another bird in a separate cage. They could watch and communicate with each other, and they would entertain each other. After they get to know each other, you could try putting them in the same cage and see how it works out. You can always separate them again.

I had a lonely little Budgie last year, and I didn't know anything about birdies. When I brought him a female, and turned it loose in the cage, she sat by herself on the bottom for overnight, not moving. The following morning,I uncovered the Cage, and fed them and everything.I closed the cage door, and she swooped up and sat next to him,and I swear to you I have never seen a Happier birdie in my life!He sang to her ,and brought her food, and groomed her,and came to life before my very eyes!My suggestion to you is to try another male, sometimes company is company, and some Female Budgies are crazy,or you could take a chance with another female, but introduce slowly in seperate cages.I think all Birdies should have friends. If you keep them in seperate cages, you can still keep them bonded to you,and they can visit during the day with each other once you determine if they get along.

Hello fellow bird girl . I think that by what you wrote that he's bonded with the bird in the mirror and by his age another bird in his cage wouldn't work. Try another bird in a separate cage and gradually get them used to one another. It may work for you and him. I've put a Cockatiel, Lovebird, and Parakeet in the same cage and they all did fine together.

I have two budgie's and they are the best of friends. At first, we had one. Then we got another one. DON'T PUT THEM IN THE SAME CAGE TOGETHER IMMEDIATELY!!!!! You have to wait for them to get to know each other first. If this does not work, then you may not be spending enough time with him!
GOOD LUCK!!!

If he has been alone for so long it might be hard to get him to warm up to another bird. Esp, since you have the mirror. When he sees himself in the mirror, thats his little friend haha. I would just leave him be.
