I'd like to know, too! My dog takes his treat into the living room, I think it's for privacy somehow, so they can be undisturbed.

My dog used to do this because with her former owners she shared a food bowl with two other dogs. She was used to taking some out of the bowl and going away to eat it where there was more room. She still does it a little, but for the most part she eats over her bowl now. I never let her get away with leaving the food on the ground though, I make sure to tell her to clean up her mess. :-)

I personally think it goes back to the primitive training. The source of the food was where the pack ate. The wolves would rip off a piece and go to a distance place to eat it and then go back for more. That way their "bite" did not get taken by another member.
I've notice that my dog does this when things are in large lumps and he knows he has to bite them into pieces. He does not do it when things are small and he can stay in one place to eat. See if for the size of your dog he has to cut down the size to be able to chew it....if so.....cut up his chunks smaller.
I had one very polite dog once who would not eat anything unless I cut it into very small bits. He would just stare at the plate and me as if to say "what is this mess, lady....cut it up"
We have 2 dogs and we have always fed them in different places so they do not feel challenged by each other. One of our dogs eats much more eagerly if we feed him in my sons room (who is his master). I think because my son eats in his room most of the time. The dog thinks he is supposed to,also.
It's hard to read their minds. Just watch an be observant and some times you can figure it out. There is always a reason.

Even though dogs have been companians to humans for many thousands of years , some of their wild nature is still in them . They associate a smooth kitchen floor with an area of bare soil . A rug or carpet is more like a grassy area .
Food dropped in sand or soil is gritty and hard to eat , not so if set on grassy area .

Is the carpet in a place where you are or where you eat? They just want to be near you or eat in the same comfort you do.

I know a family who's dog used to do that - They just took away the bowl altogether and dump a scoop of food on the floor (Kind of a strange family...).

Because they might get scared or just want to eat and lay down on carpet at the same time. My pup does it. I tellhim "No" but he doesn't get it.

ha ha ha ha!! Great question! I often wonder why also. I think it's because they want to eat with the family. My dogs do it all the time for companionship!
too funny! too true!

idk my dog does that too. I think it's because it's easy for them to eat there then directly out of the bowl because they can lay it down and then eat it, also they mite not like your slippy kitchen floor because they slide around? vote best =]
