Some people get self-conscious when asked this question, not all people. I think that some people feel this way because they consider it to be a rather personal question and feel awkward about either answering it, or wanting to tell the asker that it is none of his/her business, but not knowing how to do so. Also, there may be an element of embarrassment involved, if the person being asked does not earn very much money. Also if the person being asked earns a vast amount of money.

For some, this is a measure of their success in life or a measure of their status in their social circle. While it may not make you uncomfortable (you probably have pretty good self-esteem, or a job that takes in much more than the average joe :-), please try to remember that it is a sensitive subject for some and be respectful of that. Some people are even uncomfortable by finding out what others make. For some reason, it is not considered good manners by our society.

Because if they are earning a low wage, why mention it as it could lower their self esteem, and if they earn a lot then they don't want to appear as show offs.
Why talk about it, it's personal. Not everyone is as confident as you are I guess.

Because they feel it is personal information. People get self-conscious because people are competitive when it comes to earnings. They don't want to feel inferior or be viewed as inferior because they make less, and they don't want to foster envy if they make more.

A person's salary and personal earnings are very personal. Asking someone that type of question is rude and intrusive. It's like asking someone how much they weigh or what their faith is.

because when people know you make a lot of money, they start to get ideas about you and that can lead to bad things. you never hear of a poor family being asked for a huge ransom, do you? i know how dark a human can be and i don't open myself up to that, ever.
