Perry McCarthy appeared in 2002 and 2003 on the BBC's Top Gear motoring show as The Stig, a masked, anonymous, racing driver who evaluated the latest high performance cars. McCarthy was the original, black-suited Stig, who was "killed off" at the start of the 3rd series, possibly because he revealed being the Stig in his autobiography.
A Daily Express article has reported that Julian Bailey is secretly "The (white suited) Stig" from BBC2's Top Gear however Top Gear have never confirmed or denied this.

Perry McCarthy was the original, black-suited Stig from 2002 to 2003 when he was "killed off" he was seen driving a xjs off the end of an aircraft carrier, it is claimed he was killed off possibly because he revealed being the Stig in his autobiography.
The Daily Express reported that Julian Bailey is secretly "The current (white suited) Stig", BBC have never admitted that this is the truth,
It is believed and highly concievable that the stig is not just one person, Damon hill, Nigel Mansell, Mark Webber, Ben Collins and a number of other racing drivers when asked by jeremy clarkson if they were the stig they just avoided answering the question, leading the watching public to believe they could be the stig,
my own opinion on this is it is just not one person, my opinion is based on the theory of the racing line if you watch the stig closely on a number of episodes he takes a different line many times, also the way he handles the car, take damon hill for example he is a smooth driver he places the car into the corner where as mark webber seems to wrestle the car into the corner.

''When former F1 driver Nigel Mansell appeared on the show, Jeremy Clarkson noted that the Stig theorised that the Suzuki Liana (the show's "reasonably priced car" at the time) could achieve a 1:44 time on the track.[15] Mansell proved the Stig's theory by lapping in a time of 1:44.6; The Stig subsequently posted a lap-time of 1:44.4 in the Liana. During the review of Jenson Button's lap, Clarkson commented that he, as did most of the other F1 drivers, took very different racing lines from the Stig's. Button commented that "...obviously, the Stig isn't a Formula One Driver then".

why would it be mark webber, i think he would focus more on F1 !!!

there has been 2 Stigs interior the historical past of staggering kit. the 1st one (appeeared in season a million & 2) customary because of the fact the Black Stig, grow to be Perry McCarthy, former formulation a million driving force. His id grow to be revealed while he publiched his e book, Flat Out, Flat Broke in 2003. interior the 1st episode of the third sequence, the unique Stig (McCarthy) grow to be "killed off", with some spoof photos of the Stig supposedly driving off the tip of the British airplane provider HMS Invincible after failing to brake in time. some have faith this grow to be because of the uncovering of his id. This led to a metamorphosis of gown and the "white Stig" grow to be presented interior the 2nd episode of sequence 3, on November 2, 2003. There are rumours abound that the present white Stig is Damon Hill, additionally a former F1 driving force, because of the fact interior the episode the place he grow to be the concentrated visitor, he did no longer actual deny the accusation. those rumours have been helped by potential of British comedian Jimmy Carr, whom at a London experience, grow to be asked by potential of a member of the objective audience who the Stig grow to be, and without hesitation mentioned, "nicely, it was once Damon Hill, now it relatively is a few rally driving force." This won an "Oooooh" from the objective audience, and then he mentioned, "Yeah, I signed a freelance with BBC to no longer launch that suggestions, yet so what, i've got even have been given a freelance with Channel 4." i do no longer think of staggering kit will ever show the Stig's id, or a minimum of, as quickly as that's got here across, by threat or purposely, they're going to replace whoever is the present Stig, because of the fact the factor of bringing Stig into the tutor grow to be so as that staggering kit might have an impartial oppinion of the vehicles they examined. i'm hoping it is the respond u want =) this Stig controversy drives me loopy, too.

There's been a host of names banded about over the years (there's been a few 'Stigs') Mansell, Hill, etc..

But I think it's Steve McDonald from 'Street Cabs'....

Dear oh dear - how many more time is this going to be asked? One's just finished being voted on, another is in voting, and now another one - and despite what anybody says, the BBC keep it a secret - so the question is un-answerable - otherwise it may not have already been asked another 222 times ! ! !

Hammonds biggest fan has a point...

my theory is though that the stig is an illegal immigrant and they are still working on his papers which is why they cannot reveal his identity.
