I've heard the term but don't like it. My guess is that people are afraid of using a stronger term--for that, we give credit!--or just don't know any better, or they've heard it from someone else and think it's okay to use too. Well, I tried to say that once and received a STRONG exhortation from my parents not to do so :/

In the old testament if you didn't do exactly as he said he smote you. He smote (smited) people right and left and demanded cow sacrifices a lot. Like there's one story in the Bible that they won a war, and 100 people died after that because they looked in the Ark.
