Several times over the last few years Nascar has penalized teams by not allowing the Crew Chief to come to the track! In some cases the cars ran just as good or better!
Is the crew cheif allowed to have communication with the subsitute crew cheif during the race? Can the crew cheif that is suspended buy a ticket and come to the race? If so do they set with the fans, or do they get a special place to set where they can see better than if they were in the pits and then relay information? This penalty seems to me to be a joke unless there is no contact allowed between the crew chief and the team during the race!
How does this really work?

Seems to me that when Tony Jr had his suspention time the ruling was that you can't have "radio" communications. Now cell phones and laptop computers didn't fall into the category of radio communications.
Also the rule was that the crew chief could not be in the pit area or the shop area. That's not to say that they all can't meet up in a motorhome parked outside the gates. Also it doesn't stop the crew chief from sitting in the stands either.
When Tony Eury Jr sat in the stand he said he was able to see more from there. Also having the ability to watch the race and listen to the sports announcers gave him more ideas. He saw it as an advantage.
It seems like Tony Eury Jr was seen in the stands because Dale Jr slipped up and metioned seeing him in the stands. The thing is nothing would have ever been said about it unless Tony had not said anything in front of the media. When he talked about it to the cameras Brian France looked at it as if he was flaunting the fact that he was still able to do his job despite being suspended. Well You know how Brian plays with others... Not very well.
I don't know if there was actually a rule made that point blank said stay away from the track if you are suspended but Brian France did come out and through the media said that he didn't expect people to flaunt beig there and then on another occasion he said that he strongly encouraged suspended crew chiefs to stay away unless they wanted more penalties. It's like no offical rule but you could still get a violation. Just like any other rule making procedure. He calls it as it happens.
Either way there is no way to completely enforce the rule with all the technology floating around like in car audio and video, devices like blue tooth for cellular phones, cameras, laptops, internet, etc........ They will still find a way to communicate if needed.
I do think it can actually be benificial to have the head crew chief where he has a better overlook of things. One thing that Tony Jr said was he was able to see when Dale Jr's car started to change before Dale said anything over the radio. In that sense he was able to make a judgement on what needed to be done earlier.
There is a lot that can be learned about what other teams do just by listening to the announcers. A good announcer can be educating to the audience and to the crew chiefs. I really don't think Chad Knaus or Tony Eury Jr either one was at a disadvantage.

It can be a big disadvantage. It's all about the chemistry. It's like everybody in everyday life, you have several people that you know, but then you have a few best friends who you enjoy talking with. Usually your best friends are people that just get you and you don't really have to breakdown every little detail for them. Thats how a good race team will work as well. Most drivers would consider their crew chief as a best friend.
With the #48 and #24, both those teams are so strong that they can go without the normal crew chief for a handful of races and still post pretty strong results. Other teams are not on that level, if they lose their head guy on the pit box for a month or so, it could ruin their whole season.

Some. If you have everything set up good, and you have contengency plans in place incase you dont have your crew cheif, everything can be rather seamless, almost like nothing ever happened.
However, if you dont plan for it, or you got any problems, having someone that could be a new crew cheif for the time the regular crew cheif is out could hinder the team greatly.
It all just depends on how you got it planned, and if you are well prepared in case something happens. Its kinda like if your owning a sports team, and your star player gets hurt/suspended. If your not well prepared in not having a good farm system or scouting players, or having good backups, your screwed.

20%, Disadvantage ? Keeping up with track temps and all.
Communication not being there,with 2 people knowing each other like a brother..Knowing the driver's voice..[Example] ;
Loose & Loooooose & Loooooooooooooooooooose !!!!
I believe as far as,getting kicked out of a race ????......
Chad Knaus said,The way he landed, after getting kicked-out of Daytona.. He didn't bother to ask for a grand-stand ticket lol
Didn't hurt the team though... Johnson won the race !!!

It seems to me that they can still be in touch by phone or by computer..There fore they still can call some shots. Then why even have the suspension...They should stay home and watch it on T.V.like me!!!!
