75 to 200 dollars if you can afford it

"Should" is such a heavy word. Depends largely on how much they *can* spend and what kind of message they want to convey to their children about consumerism and the mass-marketing of Christmas.

I would think the typical middle-class American family might go for about $100-200, give or take. That way they can get the child a decent gift without putting too much emphasis on the dollar-value of love. If that makes sense. (And I'm saying this with my 14-year-old stepdaughter right next to me.)

Her input: "They could get the one big thing a kid wants, and not a lot of little junk they don't really care about." (Think iPod or digital camera.) Same idea for birthdays.

If a family can afford more, they might want to give a bigger item like a computer or gaming system, or maybe a piece of nice jewelry if it's a kid that's into that kind of thing.

Depends on how much you can afford and if there are any other children to consider. I have a nearly 9 year old and 6 year old. I say every year I wont go mad but they get upto £500 each spent on them and I cant really afford that. My trouble is I shop in Sept to end of November and its all wrapped up now. The price of PSPs, Nintendo Wii, are over the £200 budget. So if you get that and one other item say a named Jacket especially for girls youve spent nearly £400 and they have only two presents. Like I say it really is upto you how much you can afford and want to spend. If theyre old enough to wait then tell them you will take them shopping in the January sales!!! Surely family members will buy a little gift for them to have for xmas day or you buy some of their fav choccies until youhit the sales!

The parents should stop the childs pocket money in June, explaining that it is all in the cause of a bumper Christmas present. Then buy the child a piece of total tat for Christmas and really admire it when opened.
Result: everyone happy.

It does depend on many things that aren't in your question. Only child? Family income or affordability. My only child, and outside family members with small incomes sharing Christmas with us doesn't provide that many useful meaningful gifts. Although it is always the thought that counts and I raised him to completely understand that and always be gracious. I would spend form $150.00-175.00 on him each Christmas....However, this was also taking into consideration of the NEEDS.....socks, t-shirts, outerwear, underwear, jeans, etc....this came first....and then a game or new Toy on his Santa List of the 10 most wanted items.

Usually 2 - 3 hundred dollars, depending on what value gifts they usually ask for. For instance, my brother always asks for things like gameboys, Wii's, and iPods. So he only gets an expensive gift every couple of years. I usually ask for shoes or a DVD. So this year I'm asking for an iPod, so I'll definitely get it.

Also, the more individual things you ask for, the less money will be spent on each one. If a teen wants something expensive, they should narrow down their list to one or two other things.

My parents normally spend £50-£100 for my Xmas present (I'm within your age range), but then they usually spend something between £150 to £300 for my birthday, so it really depends on how much they pay for my birthday - I don't usually ask for expensive things for Xmas anyways.

I think that the parents should spend £50 -ish

It all depends on the parents' income! Obviously a family where the parents' combined income is $100,000 will spend far more than when the combined income is $20,000.

For the average working class family, $50 to $75 is enough. People shouldn't go bankrupt trying to impress anyone.

It all depends on the income and lifestyle of the family. If the parents are spendthrift they would give the child a minimal amount of cash or gift. If they are super rich how about a jet plane ?
