I don't think you'll find a 3,000 Ellsworth bike. When you have it built right, it will have a lot better ride than a Trek. It's like comparing a Volkswagen with a Mercedes Benz.

But I think the frames start above 2,000 bucks, so that leaves you with less than 1,000 bucks for the rest of the build, so you would have to put a very cheap set to complete. Unless your comparing a used Ellsworth that is in good shape with a new Trek. If that is so, and the Ells is in good shape, go for it.

Ellsworth is one of the top builders, is a lot smaller than Trek but really makes good bikes.

Added:

Volkswagen cars are very good, so I didn't put the comparison to say that Trek is necesary low end or crappy, it's just that in ride quality it will likely not compete with Ells..

for those that say that the components are the only important stuff on a bike, that's not real. Well, in a way it is, the frame is the most important component in a bike. You could change whatever you want and say that you have improved your bike, but if you change the frame you can't say is the same bike.

Well there are bikes made by Ellsworth.

I do agree with Carl, though. If you are going to spend that kind of money I would stay with Trek. Especially if you have a local Trek dealer. There is so much more you need a bike shop for after the purchase.

The most important thing I have found it to actually ride both bikes. I have read so much in magazines, then when you ride a bike it can be totally different than it is described in the magazines. It is like art, each person will look for and like something different. I have ridden different Ellsworths and Treks and have had different opinions of each I have ridden. The way a bike fits you and handles can make more of a difference than the pure quality of the bike. Go ride both, some dealers will do a demo bike program, then decide which one you enjoy more.

Ellsworth's frame are nicer and more expensive than most of Trek's so for $3000 you will have to deal with cheaper components so a Trek will be a better buy if you keep what comes on it because sometimes they come with parts you'll want to change pretty quickly.

imo Ellsworth is better, period. if you plan on keeping it for while, and possibly wearing out/replacing/upgrading components get the nicer frame--get the Ellsworth. if you may not have it very long, and the the Trek comes with nicer bits or whatever, then get the Trek...

i'm no Trek basher (i think they offer good a value), but i have never ridden one that i'd call...inspiring (and i used to work for a trek dealer, so i've ridden many).

ride them both, if you can.

Never heard of "Ellsworth". And what makes a bike better is it's frame and other parts. Derailers, ect. I'd go for a Trek.
