Many states have a requirement of age 12, others do not specify. However, I can guarantee I would NEVER let a ten year old babysit. Then again, I'd have a hard time letting a high school kid babysit (I teach high school); however, I did sit when I was twelve, so it all just depends on the kid!

many 10 yr olds, I think want to babysit because they feel like a grown up and this is fine, but, babysitting is a responsibility that is a mature move.

With babysitting should also come with the responsibility of knowing CPR and First Aid. These are things that our babysitters know just as a precaution in case something happens.
10 is young. I would feel better if she was 14/ 15.

I think she is too young. I would maybe have her help out when I am home if the children were older, say 2+, but I would NEVER leave her home alone with my child, she is simply too young and inexperianced at her age. A good age to start would be about 13 (and taking the maturity and person in mind and ages of children) and only for a few hours at a time, not very long babysitting jobs, Maybe if I had a hair apointment, went grocery shopping or went out to pick up xmas gifts type thing. Something I wouldn't be gone long or far form home and would be able to drop in a moment if the sitter called.

I'd recommend looking up state law. Some states require that babysitters be of a certain age. I personally do think 10 is to young. While your sister might be great with kids and very smart there are some accidents that might happen that she'd be lost in. Again with state laws there are some states that say a child can not be left unattended without supervision under the age of 13.

For really short periods of time and during the day only. Maybe she could start "babysitting" kids while the mother is home preparing dinner or cleaning....that would be totally acceptable for a 10 year old to do. Or she could watch them as mom tends to a younger sibling.

Look up babysiting classes near you and get her certified, she'll look all the better with training and get more jobs that way. I think I was 11 or 12 when I started to babysit a neighbor 2 hours a day after school.

Ten is much too young to be a babysitter. She still needs a babysitter herself!

Fourteen, absolute minimum, probably more. The issue isn't whether she's good with kids when everything's going well. It's whether she can cope when one of them pukes everywhere, or has an asthma attack, or lights a fire in the wastebin.

Well in a way it is too young, but she could go to a babysitting class to learn about being a good babysitter.

The age to start babysitting depends on the maturity of the person, however 10 is definitely too young. I would think that even if she is mature for her age 13 or 14 would be the minimum starting age.

I'm 10 myself so, I agree with elsie. If u really want to babysit I suggest u have ur mother and father somewhere in the house just to make sure bad things don't happen. I mean, u can tell ur parents that they don't need to help u, but just have them in the house. This is a great way to get u ready for the real thing.
