It is the spices and seasoning that gives the pie it's flavor. You cannot taste the difference between pumpkin and sweet potato pie. I once made a pie with Bell squash and it tasted just like pumpkin pie.

I like both...grew up on Pumpkin Pie up north, now living in Fla., enjoy sweet potato pie also. Pumpkin seems smoother in texture, though, which I like.

Actually, Pumpkin pie made with Squash instead of Pumpkin is AMAZING!! it has a naturally sweeter taste. I Usually mix it up in the blender to make sure There are no stringy pieces.
