It is a high honor to be a Marine Drill Instructor since you are personally responsible for making new Marines and shaping the face of the Marine Corps and carrying on the highest traditions of the Marine Corps. Many apply but few make it through to becoming a Drill Instructor.

You must be able to do everything the recruits do but a hundred times better. Drill Instructors rarely get rest since they are with the recruits 24/7 through out their training. It is long hours and it takes a lot of dedication. A you should be the ultimate model of what a Marine should be. Highly motivated, highly dedicated, calm under stress, tough as nails and even tougher.

Like the commercial says, the Marines don't take applications, only commitments. The Marine Corps is not just a service, it is a way of life.

to become a drill instructor you basically have to make a life commitment to the marines. so if you are not in it for the long haul then this is a not a good reason for joining the marines

I am a marine brat, went through the bootcamp, and marrying one. My fiance said it was fun. Lots of had games. You need to be confident in yourself. Listen tot he orders and commands given to you. Follow them to the T. DO not goof around. I heard it has gotten easier because they took out the crucible? I heard a drill instructor tell me that...I am not sure though. Train yourslef and prepare for it. There is nothing that is scary or death difying about it. Your body will hurt. Drink as much water as you can while you are there. Do not try and take more food than you are given or steal the peanut butter. Do not walk around naked (they will make everyone strip and run around). When they say that you need to do it again do not get mad. When they say some people were too slow and you need to do it again do not get made. They are most likely just messing with you. The instructors have sick minds and get pleasure out of torturing you because that is what was done to them. Keep your cool and just take it as it comes. Ask your recruiter for some excericises and help preparing so you ar in good enough shape to get through it fairly easily as far as physical fitness goes. You do not want to be the fat kid or the slow kid. You do not want to stick out at all for anything that can be negative they will take that and run with it. The instuctors me and my fiance had were all really in shape and pushed you to the limits. Good Luck. OORAH future devil dog!

Once you graduate from boot camp and get your orders, from time to time an announcement will be made at morning muster: Attention all personnel, anyone interested in going to drill instructor school please see the top. If accepted you will have to go to DI school and after graduating that you will be allowed to serve as a DI. After serving DI duty you return to your regular duty's. All marines are encouraged to be DIs from time to time to break up the monotony of routine marine training. All marines are expected to be able to be DIs but are not required to do so. It is a lot of fun for gung ho types.

well drill instructor is a B billet, you have to wait until you are Sergeant, that will take about 4 years in the Marine Corps, then you will put in a package saying "i want to go to DI school" they will then put you into boot camp your second time around and it will be 1000X harder. there are very few rules because everyone that goes knows what there getting in to.

The posts here tell you pretty accurately about how to become a DI. You know... make Sgt. Apply to be a DI. May not make it... but that's the easy stuff.

To be an effective DI, you need to cultivate a sweet and kindly personality. You need to be soft-spoken. You have to be eminently friendly to all you meet.

When you want somebody to do something, you need to learn to explain why it is important to do what you ask... everything... why it's important to the US, why it's important to the mission of the military in general, why it's important to the mission of their particular service, why it's important to the unit, and why it's important to them. In my experience, some DIs tend to skip this step... or at least limit their explanation to why it's important to the individual(s) in question.

You have to be immaculate in your appearance. You shoes need to shine so brightly as to blind pilots flying 30,000 feet overhead. Ships at sea need to be able to home in on your polished brass from five miles out... in a dense fog.

Oh, and never ever raise your voice... above 500 db.

And one last thing, I have recently heard that flogging is no longer considered an acceptable form of motivation. Wish they'd had that one when I went through OCS.

Guy, if you make it, you're among some of the best folks in the world. To those that made it, especially the couple I've had in my face on occasion, thanks. I (and probably thousands like me) might not be around were it not for you... and some of the stuff you were able to pound into our skulls.

Go to the academy. DI"s are trained and forged, not promoted from the ranks.
