While it can be reflected in a dozen different areas, the most important real life lesson that a child needs to learn, is that all actions have consequences, and that the degree that their life will work for them is the degree to which they pay attention and think things through. While we can't control all the variables, life will ask us to take responsibility for the choices we have made, and when we have thought them through with an open mind and an open heart we will find it much easier to sleep each night.

I think the best lesson that should ever be taught a child from a parent is unconditional love. That no matter what they do they will always be loved.

Something my dad said to me when I was thirteen and a real beast:
"You can try as hard as you want to shake me, but I am never going away. I will always be here in your face."
At the time I didn't understand what he was trying to tell me. Now I do. :-)
