Well Zach, my friend, I don't know how you're going to separate the b.s. from the facts here, but all I can tell you is that I used to instruct on, and am rated on the B717.....what the boys say about McDonnell-Douglas and Boeing is correct.....and the interesting thing is that FAA has never issued a type rating for the B717!......my license says DC9....and I've never flown a DC9!!...........the flight instrumentation is different for one thing......the 717 is a glass cockpit aircraft.......aside from that, the similarities to the DC9 were so numerous that the FAA just decided to go ahead and issue a DC9 type........I have never been inside the cockpit of an MD 80, so I don't know how to compare the two.........but I know the MD 80 only has 2 engines. Interesting fact about McDonnell-Douglas and Boeing and how the FAA gave DC type rating on a Boeing aircraft.......ahh big business!!

It's Bigger (106 in 2-class compared to 130).And after McDonnel Douglas merged with Boeing. Boeing Couldn't Sell it as the MD-80/MD-90/MD-95 Series... So Boeing Sold it as the 717

The 717 is Actually the MD-95. The Aircraft was designed by McDonnel Douglas ENTIRELY but then Boeing bought MD out and re-classified it as the 717.
The 717 has a higher MTOW, more advanced Avionics/ Basically a modernized version of the modernized version of the DC-9-30.

Now not much, they are all well-nigh the same plane. A boss-eighty(ninety) is a DC-9, the name was simply converted when Douglas Corp merged with McDonnell aircraft. The 717 is meant to be a extra advanced version (glass cockpit, and so on). And in reality the 717 was once at first the MD-95, until Boeing bought McDonnell Douglas. Equal plane, exceptional editions, one of a kind manufactures

the Boeing 717 is just a newer version. The last McDonnell MD-80 was the MD-95.
When Boeing bought McD they introduced newer avionincs and renamed the plane a B717.

Besides the avionics, the engines are different. MD-80 uses JT8D-200 and 717/MD-95 uses RR BR-715

The 717(MD-95) is a smaller, shorter version of the MD-80 with modern avionics and high-bypass turbofan engines.
It is similar in size and capabilities to the original DC-9 aircraft, which is where the MD-80 originated from.
