If you're only 13, your body hasn't fully developed yet. That and you are only 5ft tall. Being that height means that your weight is going to be significantly lower than those of your taller friends. It may be frustrating, but for right now eat healthy and don't watch the scale so much. Once you get somewhere in the 18-20 year old range, your body will have grown enough to where you will have a stable weight range and can work on body shape and size then. Just be patient and give it some time.

Gain Weight Step 1 - eating

Eating is the first and most important factor that is needed to gain weight. It's simple - you need to eat more calories than you burn. This does not mean eating anything and everything that is not nailed down. Carefully plan your meals with foods that will help you gain lean mass, not fat. I suggest 6 meals. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and three other small meals scheduled throughout the day. The goal is to eat every 2.5 to 3 hours.

Focus on foods such as steak, chicken, fruit, milk, vegetables, cheese and assorted types of nuts. It's recommended to eat 4 - 6 pieces of fresh fruit a day, and at least four tall glasses of milk. Milk is a great, cheap protein source - take advantage of it. A sample snack meal would be a glass of milk, an apple, and a hand full of peanuts.

Take time to lay out a meal plan. What you eat is the most important ingredient in a successful weight gain program.

Gain Weight Step 2 - lifting

As stated, proper eating is of utmost importance when attempting to gain weight, but if you do not lift weights, the majority of that gained weight will be fat - not muscle.

When trying to gain weight, I suggest working out three times a week. You need to lift hard and then recover for the next workout. Focus on the big exercises such as squats, deadlifts, bent-over rows, chin-ups, bench press, & military press. These are the exercises that will turn those extra calories into muscle. You are not going to gain much by doing lateral raises and step-ups every workout. You need the multiple-joint lifts that will shock your system and stimulate your body into growth. Focus on getting strong by adding a small amount of weight each workout. If you focus on strength, size will follow. Case in point, look around at your local gym - the strongest guys are also the biggest.

First of all, this whole skinny things probably won't last much longer. You'll actually be thankful for it in the future. People tend to blow up around puberty. But, if you really want to gain wait RIGHT NOW, here's what you need to do:

PROTEIN. Protein builds muscle (no, I'm not necessarily talking about VISIBLE pipes or anything!). Try to eat lots of nuts, fish, soybeans, eggs... etc. Healthy fats (found in the first three I listed) also help in gaining weight.

And in the MEANTIME, you can find tons of cool clothes in vintage shops and stuff and don't ahve to worry about modern teen stores with the crappy, cheap-looking hip huggers and stuff. You can awalys just buy kids' clothes, and get others hemmed by a tailor.

Also, avoid wearing anything too tight and anything too HUGE... it'll make you look insane skinny. Green and black can also pale you out and make you look sick, especially when you're skinny. Try horizontal striped turtlenecks or sweaters. You can also try wearing a bit of blush, it tends to make people look rosier, which isn't the same as plumper, but, it takes the focus off being stick skinny!

Good Luck! :)

WOW. I am exactly the same way. I am 12, 5 ft., and 75 lbs. I eat A LOT and still won't gain weight. Well, my doctor told me that it means we have a really fast metabolism. Basically, we have to eat more than the normal person just to stay on the right weight. If we eat an average amount, we lose weight. Therefore, we can have caloric splurges. Feel free to have a Big Mac and a large chocolate milkshake. What would clog a normal person's arteries is healthy for us.

You could gain weight by adding bulk in the form of muscle. Eat lots of protein and enjoy some of the good protein shakes on the market. Exercise with free weights. If you can, join a club, at least long enough to get instruction on proper weight training. As thin as you are, you should get gratification quickly because you will actually see the muscles developing.

Don't just try to add fat.

I know several women who complained about being too thin when they were your age. Every one of the eventually filled out and some of them have problems with being OVER weight now.

If you are healthy, that's what counts.

Well dont eat fast food it will make you feel sick and will get very addicted to it and eat so much you will gain more weight than you want. Try having lots of chicken & steak here and there. With potatos, toast, veggies and fruits. Keep to that 5 times a day so 3 small meals and the other snacks, also crackers are good also. :) good luck honey!

You are too young to be worrying too much about weight!

At your age your body growth will be outstripping your natural bulk and muscle growth. This is when the young porkies often bloom into swans!

You have a built in advantage. You were born slim!

Just eat a balanced diet and be happy that, when your body growth stabilises, you'll probably be wowing them!

Slowly increase how much food you eat every day and try not to excersize much. Don't try to gain weight immediately because you can become very sick. Slowly gain the weight by eating foods with higher calories, fat, and carbs.
