Hello,
I have an almost 3 month old jack russel terrior. I took her to the vet the begining of the month and had given them a stool sample to be tested for worms. They said no news is good news and I havn't heard back so I assume she's worm free (plus she was dewormed before we got her)
However the vet did tell me that 1 sign of worms is a pot belly which she has and the vet did notice and still hasn't called so I assume she's fine.
Anyways she goes poop about 5 times a day its not diarreah. But she does sometimes have loose ones. Is that too often for her to be going?? I'm worried because she does have the pot belly and this seems too frequent.
I'm planning on calling the vet but before I did I wanted to know what other's thought & if I should be worried. Thanks so much in advance :)

She does occationally scoot her butt on the ground...and we do not free feed her. We give her 3 meals a day (which is what the vet told us to do)

Pooping alot is healthy, so thats not to be worried about- especially with an active breed like this..

However, if I dont here from my vets after tests I always call to double check the results (sometimes they do forget)
Plus, if your dog isnt on a monthly heart gaurd and isnt completed on all shots, its very easy for her to pick up worms..

Getting her dewormed at the vet can be the best thing. That way its in the files that you did it, they know exactly what was given and the correct dose is given.
You can though, purchase the deworming medicine for about $30 at a local pet store (I would do research on home brands though)

Also check the facal matter yourself as well... if it looks like broken up rice there is a definate sign of worms (some you can not see though) Puppys have a little bit of a pot belly, but if you notice it is larger then her rib cage and is hard, I would either take another sample in to get retested, or see if she came out positive on the last test

Good luck!

5 times a day seems a little excessivebut he/she is still a puppy and it is used to pooping "whenever". Do you "free feed" your puppy or do you give him/her a set amount a few times per day?
The pot belly can be from overfeeding (especially if you free feed). Also, a puppy needs to eat numeous small meals per day, not one big one as can be done with adult dogs. Even though my dogs are all adult, I feed twice daily...helps to keep them from getting overweight. I would NEVER free feed a dog (that means put down food and refill when empty). I know there are dogs out there that can be free fed but it is also a training and "alpha" dog issue...you control the food, you control the dog in essence.
Deworming medication can be bought over the counter from Pet Stores. It works as well as the vet meds and much more cost effective. If the dog does not have worms, it won't hurt them. If it does, then it helps.
If you try the deworming and nothing comes out and you watch the diet and you still have the issues, then get it checked out. The pup is probably just adjusting to the food. Also...make sure you feed high quality food...don't buy from the grocery store....less stool, less filler, healthier dog.
Good luck

Call the Vet! Get the results from the test and then check with the vet again before trying to deworm your dog again.
Deworming medicines are actually a poisin designed to kill worms. Giving a dog to much dewormer can cause your dog to get sick. Always check with the vet before administering any type of medicines.

Forgive me for being blunt-Has your butt ever just flat out itched? Especially after a stool sample...this would be adequate cause for the itch.I guess if people were to drag their butts on the ground in the "scooch-scooch" fashion then there would be a problem, because people have hands and can generally reach their crack to scratch it,on the other(PAW) hand, dogs are not this eloqouant in their demeanor,if it feels good do-it type approach would be better suited. On another note: there are types of worms that exist in animals most of their lives, these types cause no harm-If the vet hasn't called you, there is usually no need to be concerned, they are professionals and they "Do" care for your animal, otherwise there is the possibility of liability cases which they don't want, the little girl sounds to be growing in the right direction and she appears to be in good hands....joel

I would call the vet and ask if they found anything why treat her for something she may not have does she have the pot belly after she is done eating and before she poos it out it could be because she over eats. Ask the vet and find out from them even if you are concerned about the pot belly no question is stupid u r just concerned about ur pet.

The next time your dog goes to poop, look at the poop(I know this sound gross) but if it has string looking things in it then the dogs has worms if not it doesn't. Also you can look at the dogs butt and if it has rice looking things on it's butt, it has worms..I wouldn't worry about it if you haven't heard from the vet.

It could be tape worms. When they get dewormed they dont treat for tapeworms. My dog got wormed and was getting sick and had a pot belly, so I took him to the vet and they tested him for tapeworms and treated him! So go to the vet and tell them to test him just for tapeworms!

well your dog should be wormed every month until she is a year old, worms or not it will keep the dog more healthy, and just because there is no worms in her poo doesent mean she aint got worms, so get tablets from vets not from pet store and worm her every month, for until the dog is a year old then once every 3 months, it better to be safe than sorry, good luck

If she scoots around on her butt that is another sign. Puppies can poop that many times. But seeing how you probably paid to have the pop checked for worms I would call for the results.

Why not just worm him anyway? Prevention is better than cure!

Please call the vet and ask these questions.
