The Officer enters a code prior to the plate number that tells the data base what type of license plate to search for.
A Disabled Plate does not have the same number/letter configuration as a regular license plate.
In my jurisdiction, we were also able to run the placard displayed from the dashboard or hanging from the rear view mirror to see if it matched the vehicle or the driver.
In those cases, the vehicle would have a regular plate, and the Disabled Placard.

Call or check with the Secretary of State, or your DMV. They will let you know if you can obtain a handicap license plate with the same amount of numbers as a regular plate.

In Missouri, all Missouri tags are ran the same. Just enter the numbers/letters displayed on the tag. The database will tell you if it's handicap, truck, car, ect.
Handicap tags have their own combination of letters and numbers that make them easily identifiable, but a person can also have a placard that they can hang from their mirror.

When you run a plate, you enter a code indicating what type of plate it is. For example, in WI, you type "PC" for a passenger car, "TK" for a truck, and "DS" for a disabled plate.
The plates themselves are stamped with the type of plate they are, and all of our disabled plates end with the letter "D", and most have the blue wheelchair logo on them.
