not exactly.
the diet that a person follows determines the amount of muscle mass that they have not the type of equipment that they use. with a proper diet increases in muscle mass can be achieved with either free weights or machines. however for optimum development of strength and maximum stimulation to muscle tissue free weights are superior. free weights allow the body to move in all 3 planes of motion, machines only utilize 2. this is why free weights will always be superior in that aspect to machines. explicit use of machines can also cause a condition caused pattern overload as the muscles can not load share with machines as they are designed to do.
hands down free weights are superior to machines

The bodybuilders and trainers will tell you that free weights are better than machines because, as you said, you have to use more muscles when lifting free weights in order to balance the weights and lift with proper form. Since most real-life application of muscle involves lifting using good form and balance if you don't want to get injured, free weights are better in that sense. However, you'll find that many bodybuilders use both. If you had to choose one over the other, go with free weights.

Free weights are better because you also have to utilize your stabilizing muscles (which machine weights usually don't work on).

Yes because you need to use all your stabilization muscles to control free weights, thus increasing overall muscle mass.

Free weights have the potential to gain more muscle because of the lower weight increases you can make.
Most machines go up by 10lb increments, but you might not increase your muscle strength by 10lbs every week. With freeweights you can increment as little as 1lb so you can maximize the weight you lift for best results.

NO, FREE WEIGHTS ARE NOT BETTER, TO GAIN MASS, YOU HAVE TO OVERLOAD THE MUSCLES, AND THAT CAN BE DONE WITH MACHINES OR FREE WEIGHTS, IN FACT, IF ONE OF THEM IS BETTER FOR MASS, IT WOULD BE MACHINES, YOU DONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT STABILIZING AND BALANCING THE WEIGHT, THEREFORE YOU CAN USE MORE WEIGHT. AND REALLY TRAIN THE MUSCLE UNTIL FAILURE. I USE MOSTLY MACHINES, LIKE THEY SAY, "IT'S NOT THE VEHICLE, IT'S HOW YOU DRIVE IT"
