I think my computer operating system has been messed up.

I have an XP Professional Service Pack 2 cd.

How do I remove the current operating software and then install a new one?

Ok----
By asking this question --- it shows your level of knowledge on computers --- no offense given, and I hope none is taken.
But !!! --- you are trying to get into something that can get you blown off your computer , if not done right. On the same token --- this would be a good time for you to learn.
So---- let"s begin , and whatever you do --- think first before you click that mouse,or hit a key.
To format the drive :
Start >My Computer > C disk >left click(on C disk) then right click to open >Scroll down to : format and click on it > Start.
This will start the process.
You will need your Windows XP-pro disk to insert in your cd-rom.
At this point ---- you really should get a buddy to come over and help you out the first time --- to show you the "ropes".
All the detailed information will take a small book to really show you the proper way ---- watching how it is done and being taught a time or two is really the way to go.
Many times when your computer messes up ---- it can be restored --- instead of being re-installed.
To do this -- why don"t you click on :
Start > All Programs >Accessories > System Tools > System Restore >Restore My Computer To A Earlier Time.
Try this first -- it might solve your problem ----.
Then if it works ok --- go to Filehippo, on the web , and download > Tuneup Utilities 2007 , CCleaner , PerfectDisk 8.0(this will defrag the H.D.)--- you need to keep it defragged weekly. These programs can be setup to run on auto and will really help you out in keeping your registry clean and tight ---where many problems come from --- along with a cluttered up hard drive. Limit your startup programs too --- only the ones you really need to use at bootup-- turn others off(use CCleaner for this)
Always think "lean and mean" of what you put on your hard drive ---- if you fill it up too much , don"t defrag it often enough --- it will slow down and start to mess up -- I keep mine at about 75% max full so it will defrag properly.
You also have security issues to consider ----- a virus can /will mess you up also ------ .
Some things(not all) you may want to do is to download some things --once again from Filehippo >like -------
Avg 7.5 ---Avg Anti-spyware 7.5 --- Spybot Search & Destroy -- Lavasoft --- and perhaps Comodo pro(firewall)and also from Comodo you can get Comodo Boclean.
Instead of using Windows Media Player --- why not use VLC player and get away from Internet Explorer also, and use Firefox. You will get less "spies/viruses" ~~~~ and other problems.
There"s more ---- but then I don"t want to take away all your fun , in learning.
All the above should get you on a good start ------.
I"m on and off Answers from time to time --- I'll watch for you ,and see how you are doing. E-mail me if you like .
Happy Holidays ---------------.

Put your XP cd into the cd drive and restart your system. When you get to the screen that asks if you want to load XP now, say yes by hitting Enter. On the following screen, follow the instructions on removing and creating a "Partition". After this is done, XP will want to format your hard drive. Allow this to happen, but be advised, you will loose all data on the drive. After the format process has completed, XP will begin the installation process. Now just follow the yellow brick road.

format the hard drive and start over....make sure you back up all of your personal files before you do it because they won't be there when you're done. Your computer should have come with a system restore disk, pop it in when you're ready to go and follow the directions.
