The best rum for eggnog is Captain Morgan's Deluxe (dark rum). Grate fresh nutmeg on top for a finishing touch. Happy Holidays!

I am a former chef from Canada and either is fine, it is your choice, I prefer dark rum myself, and with a dash of nutmeg it is a nice pre-dinner drink or something to enjoy at night after the dishes are washed up. Here in Canada we also use Canadain whisky (Rye), you can also use Irish whisky or American bourbon or sourmash like Jack Daniels, something with a smoky heady tasted, even liqour's like Southern Comfort, Yukon Jack and Spice rums are nice to.
Adding is your choice, some will add it to a bowl for a crowd, just keep the kiddies away, or a 1/2 oz in a a glass, as most people do not take a big enough serving for a full shot.

yup I would recommend it. I had good results with dark rum.
I would also recommend you make the eggnog the night before so that the flavors of the alcohol and the custard will have a chance to develop.
Traditionally you grate fresh nutmeg on top of the eggnog just before serving.

vodka wouldn't be as good as rum. Put a sweet rum in it though. And it doesn't matter if you've never drank rum, rum and eggnog go hand and hand. Trust me. Get some Sailor Jerry's or something. Appleton estate is what my grandfather uses.

If you're a rum drinker, you'll love it. I don't like rum unless it's coconut (i know extremely girly stereotype :D). I thought I'd like it but nope, I have to stay clear of it even tho it smells really aromatic!
