Eccl. 9:5, 10: “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all . . . All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol,* the place to which you are going.” (If they are conscious of nothing, they obviously feel no pain.) (*“Sheol,” AS, RS, NE, JB; “the grave,” KJ, Kx; “hell,” Dy; “the world of the dead,” TEV.)

Ps. 146:4: “His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts* do perish.” (*“Thoughts,” KJ, 145:4 in Dy; “schemes,” JB; “plans,” RS, TEV.)

If this is true this would discount eternal pain in hell

What is the origin of the teaching of hellfire?

In ancient Babylonian and Assyrian beliefs the “nether world . . . is pictured as a place full of horrors, and is presided over by gods and demons of great strength and fierceness.” (The Religion of Babylonia and Assyria, Boston, 1898, Morris Jastrow, Jr., p. 581) Early evidence of the fiery aspect of Christendom’s hell is found in the religion of ancient Egypt. (The Book of the Dead, New Hyde Park, N.Y., 1960, with introduction by E. A. Wallis Budge, pp. 144, 149, 151, 153, 161) Buddhism, which dates back to the 6th century B.C.E., in time came to feature both hot and cold hells. (The Encyclopedia Americana, 1977, Vol. 14, p. 68) Depictions of hell portrayed in Catholic churches in Italy have been traced to Etruscan roots.—La civiltà etrusca (Milan, 1979), Werner Keller, p. 389.

But the real roots of this God-dishonoring doctrine go much deeper. The fiendish concepts associated with a hell of torment slander God and originate with the chief slanderer of God (the Devil, which name means “Slanderer”), the one whom Jesus Christ called “the father of the lie.”—John 8:44.

You are so right. The dead cannot feel pain, nor can they communicate with anyone. They are in a state of unconsciousness. The Bible speaks of death as sleeping. That is why many say regarding a loved one who has died "They have fallen asleep in death"
Jesus said that about his good friend Lazarus who died. He told his disciples that he was asleep.
Satan the devil is responsible for the viscous lie that God tortures his creation. That lie began in the Garden of Eden when Satan told Eve that she and Adam would not die, even though God said they would. Who proved to be the liar? It was certainly not Almighty God who cannot lie. Adam and Eve died. They ceased to exist. No part of them lived on for that would have made God out to be the liar. Their punishment was that they lost the right to live forever. As the Bible says--they simply returned to the ground from where they came. Genesis 3:19
The Bible is so clear on what happens when we die and we can rest assured that our loving and merciful Creator is just that---eternal torment is not something He would do nor has He ever thought of it. ( Jeremiah 32:35) Our God is a God of justice.

Why might you war with eternal Hell? With all the flaws that are solid and precise interior the word to appreciate and include, why concentration on hell? examine Luke 6:20-40 9. in case you do something incorrect do no longer make excuses He already is familiar with, in basic terms exhibit regret as quickly as you recognize you're incorrect. And understand this atheist would not have a controversy in the event that they did no longer already have faith!

Ecclesiastes 9:5 - KJV - "For the living know that they shall die, but the dead know not anything, neither have they anymore a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten."

All men living know they are going to die physically whether saved or unsaved, but the dead (spiritually ignorant) know nothing (about spiritual death) while they are living. They have lost a chance of any reward because there are no rewards in Hell. Their rejection of Christ has removed any hope of eternal life and all that goes with it.

The memory of them is forgotten is true of all men who leave this life because generations pass and many if not all who went before us are eventually forgotten. This however does not imply that God has forgotten anyone or that in the life to come everyone is forgotten. On the contrary, everyone is remembered on the day of judgment and will receive their just reward or punishment before the entire universe.

9:10 - KJV - Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might, for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave wither thou goest.

This is an encouragement to work hard during this life because all that you rely on in this life will be gone when you hit the grave. There is no work (the dead don't labor), there is no device (all equipment and tools are left behind), there is no knowledge (a corpse has no awareness of anything) but knowledge exists in the soul that has left the corpse lying in the ground. The same can be said of wisdom. A corpse is nothing more than a corpse. The soul moves into another dimension and will experience either eternal pleasure or pain according to the choice they make in this life.

Hell and the grave are not synonymous in this or any other verse in scripture. The grave is for the dead body which is devoid of life. Hell is for the immortal never-dying soul that has rejected Christ and died without hope. Heaven is for the soul that has died trusting Christ for salvation.

EDIT: You chose a version that would suit you to make your argument palatable to you and whoever else chooses to believe a lie, but whatever version it was it obviously is not consistent with the original language. Further, because you are spiritually blind you cannot see my explanation until you have a personal relationship with Christ which will involve repentance for your great wickedness in casting doubt on God's Word among all your other sins and being cleansed in the precious blood of Christ. Then your spiritual eyes will be opened and you will see scripture as it should be seen and not in the perverted way you see it now.

Jeff, please stop your taunting of Christians with your fallacious "questions". Your questions are statements in disguise, and you come dangerously close to falling outside the rules of conduct for Y!Answers.

In answer to your question, I ask this: If Jehovah is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, is He the God of the living or the dead? Why does Jesus speak of humans in Heaven and Hell? Where is it that the unbelievers will wail and gnash their teeth? Why does Simon Peter tell Simon Magus that he can take his money to Hades? Why does Solomon write of Sheol (which does not mean "grave", cf. Job3:13-22 and see Dan 12:2) and not "qever"?

Please read the Bible without reference to the Watchtower's lies, especially Matt 8:1218:8, 25:31-46, Mark 3:29, John 3:36, Luke 18:30, Jude Chapter 6 through 7, 2nd Thess 1:9, Heb 6:2,Eph 1:21.

Hell is not the place for eternity, hell is the grave/paradise. The Lake of Fire as describe in Revelation is the place for eternity

This is only talking about the death until Jesus comes again, when all the dead will rise and be judged. In hell the eternal pain will probably be spiritual and not physical, as most people seem to agree.

So the worldly ego dies but what of the spiritual consciousness that defines the soul? Eccl. and Psalms are in contradiction with lots of other scripture.

Eternal ... forever ... the 2nd death, death of the soul ... lake of fire, In other words, those folks are blotted out, as tho they never existed. No tears for them because no one will remember them. Sad.

Well as a Christian I like to twist and distort any contractions you may find. So in James 12:13 it says "those who oppose Christianity will burn like chicken in the fires of hell." I hope this helps you

NO

you need to RIGHTLY didvide the WORD of TRUTH

Bible says "they are dead as thy live "...and the dead have no thought of thier deeds.....so being true sinners who are sinners do what they will being dead they think not of consequences or thier actions equating to punishment...and as the true Dead to say this body No it doesnt think nor feel nor has any thoughts of itself...but the SOUL it is punished the true man within...for as it is Written " to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord " that is to the believer...but the sinner at his death is cast into outer darkness till that day of Judgement when he is called forth to be judged...and if not names found in book of Life then he will be cast into the lake of fire , which burneth forever and ever..........

And when one dies in God they go to sleep , but awaken unto his presence...the sinner when he dies falls asleep and awakes unto outer darkness....

Cause i know from personal experience....as i was once dead into sin , was cast....but by mercies and grace of God was bought back by HIS CALL , not doctors , not meds , not man...But HE spoke my name...and heard MY CRY...and did spare me.........so there is a hell and words cannot discribe its feeling and fear and cold and hot and loneliness and its torments.......
and i knew where i was...and i was knowing , not , not knowing of its torments !!!!!!!
