This all comes down to how old the dog is and was Ajax it`s name all it`s life.
As a puppy under the age of 4 months, i would say go ahead but their would be lot`s of repetition involved, calling the new name.
Other then that I actually think Ajax is a pretty cool name.
How many dogs have you ever heard of given that name?
I would say leave it alone if he responds to it reliably.
Good Luck and God Bless

Come up with a name and play the name game with him.
Get a bunch of good, tiny little treats and keep them around the house and in your pockets. Every once and awhile say the dog's name and toss the dog a treat. Do this anywhere and everywhere. Soon the dog is going to start looking at you when you say his name. He may even start coming over to you for a treat. You could start to hold the treat and let him come take it and now you're started on teaching the dog to come.

I recently rescued a dog name King and changed his name to Clyde. He now responds to his new name. I have known quite a few people who changed the name of the dog they rescued and it only took the dog a week or two of consistently hearing the new name and getting treats when responding (even if it was just to look in the person's direction) for the dog to learn the new name.

if he really knows the name Ajax you should probably not . because if you change his name and he knows Ajax it will get him confused
Supposed you named him throtto . but he was used to Ajax . and you kept on calling him throtto he wouldnt come because he would think he's Ajax

He'll get used to you calling him anything you like, just like you get used to a new endearment. Congrats on adopting! Shepherds are terrific pets, very smart, and very protective, but LOVE kids. You can teach them almost anything, just by saying good boy, and bad boy. They don't like to be bad boys. Good luck with him.

I once got a dog named Mama. As you can imagine, it felt weird calling my dog. I renamed her, and she liked her new name. No problem. I took her about a day to totally adjust.

i have adopted two dogs. one was two years old when i got him and i immediately started calling him his new name as he didnt know his old name (very common in grey hound race dog adoptions). the second dog had been in someones home and knew her name (she actually looked at me when i said her name). i converted her to her new name by calling her her old name-new name until she started to respond to her new name. then just called her by her new name. some people come over and call her her old name (and she still remembers it)
