why is it that when I hear christians say they believe in religious tolerance that what I see them do is only tolerant of their faith?

As a christian, I have to say that we are not all rabid fanatics that get sought out by news crews and thrown on the evening news. My next door neighbors were lesbian- no, I didn't throw burning trash at their front door, I hung out with their kid. Many members of my family are divorced- no, I don't shun them, I love them a great deal. We try to love people regardless of their background, just as God does. Don't believe everything the media tells you. It's usually wrong.

Because the religious tolerance they want is everyone to be tolerant of what they want. But other faith don't matter.

Intolerance of other faiths springs from a lack of conviction that a person is right. Since they can't elevate themselves, they try to feel taller by cutting down other people.

There are many ways to achieve a relationship with G-d. Many of them are right in their own way. Those that aren't at all right are often encampments in a person's journey to find what is right for them.

I'm tolerant of such people as long as they do not try to hurt others.

It's because we know the truth, and we want you to know it too. Imagine being the only person who knew that 2+2=4, but society told you that you had to "respect" everyone's answer as equal to yours. You'd go bonkers! However, the truth about Jesus has eternal consequences. How can I love you and at the same time tolerate your decision to destroy yourself????? Is that not practicing what we preach?

They say you shouldnt abuse children but the catholic church turned that into an international hobby, never mind ignoring the jewish plight during WW2 so as you say they are tolerant only of themselves and no one else...otherwise they would not try converting a single person...

well, people talk about religious tolerance.

but why are there so many people stopping Christians from evangelising and spreading the faith, which is one of the core teachings of Jesus?

do christians have to practice compromising CHristianity?

What they mean is that YOU need to tolerate THEIR religious beliefs. Tolerating the beliefs of OTHERS is just silly because they know that YOUR god is a false one.

Care to throw around some more generalizations?

I would suggest that perhaps you modify the word "Christian" with some specifics.... "some", "certain", "liberal" "conservative"/./// whatever.

I am a Christian. And if you read through my history of answers and questions, you will see that your above assumption does not apply to me. And if it doesn't apply to me, I am quite sure there are many others its doesn't apply to , either.

peace
