Unless you are a blood family member and the person has died you won't be getting anything from the VA. Privacy Act protects all of us from people just "wanting information." If it is important ask the person themselves or their family members.

Under the FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT, you can access an ex-military person's DD-214. If you're legit, you should have the info as to how to use the FOIA.

The author of STOLEN VALOR (a book about fake vets) used the FOIA in writing his book. The book is available at the public library. Check it out and see how HE did it (he gives the info in the book).

"The Navy or the armed forces?" The Navy IS part of the armed forces. One is not EMPLOYED by the U.S .Navy.\

Do you know where he served, or what ships he was in ?
Many ships have an online presence, like the USS Indiana, in the link.
