I am Christian and I believe the bible and in heaven. This question is for those who share the faith and not just for people who want to critisize religion etc.

How will we be happy knowing that people are in hell?
Happiness is from contrasts so if nothing bad happens how will we appreciate the good.

Some theories are that we will forget all about earth so we wont even know that our friend is not in heaven etc but that sounds horrible to me.

Don't worry, you'll be brainwashed on the way in. If you don't remember all those people you love, you won't have to worry about them being tortured for eternity! After all, nothing is allowed to get in the way of the soma-induced happiness of Heaven!

Heaven in some ways has got bad press, especially with the common misunderstanding of Heaven is that in Heaven we are going to be singing praises forever and ever, playing harps and all that.

That leaves out a lot of the simple pleasures we take so much joy in. For instance, like the joy of a baby, or the pleasure of drying our clothes in the warm sunlight, or the satisfaction of a job well done, or just simply enjoying a good book or a newspaper in the morning. Paul said now we see "through a glass darkly," a poor reflection in a dim mirror. But some day this dark glass will be removed and we will be able to see clearly and be able to enjoy the real meaning of being a human being created in the image of God. The point is when the dark glass is removed, the view of Heaven is not going to change. It is going to become clearer. When that happens, I believe the things that give us pleasure in this world will make much more sense and give a whole lot more pleasure. A happiness that is genuinely satisfying is accompanied by the fullest exercise of our faculties and the fullest realization of the 'world' in which we live and has nothing to do with contrasts with the 'bad.'

The bible says that there will be no guilt in heaven, which implies that we won't be able to remember what we did on earth. We may not even remember the people we knew on earth, so we won't know that our friend is in heave. I admit, this does sound pretty harsh, but doesn't ot act as an incentive to get our friends into heaven too?
Also, i don't really think there'll be much time for worrying about who's gone to hell or whatever, considering we'll be spending eternity with God! Can you think of anything better than that?

But i suppose the real answer to this is: no-one really knows until they get there. I totally understand what you mean but, at the end of the day, we just have to put our faith in god and know that His plans are best

Your last sentence pretty much sums up why man created God. It seems unreasonable that this life is all there is, therefore there must be a creator who put us here for a reason.

Of course if you read only one book on evolutionary biology or cosmology you would understand that you are wrong and, yes, this is pretty much all there is. We are on this planet to procreate like all other species. Simple as that.

And why would death be so worrying? In effect you were dead for billions of years before you sprang into life and you didn't suffer then did you?

If a belief in a God makes you feel better, go ahead. There ain't no Heaven though.

The Bible - God's word, tells us that only Jesus has gone into heaven, although the churches often teach other things. The Bible tells us that when we die we sleep in death. We are told in Ecclesiastes 9 in the Bible that the dead know nothing. In another verse we are told that the dead cannot praise God.

When Jesus returns we are told that he will raise people from the graves. If they have trusted in God and tried to obey Him they will be given eternal life in God's kingdom on earth.

Jesus taught his disciples and the people about the love of his Father. Jesus believed the things written in the Old Testament about Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, King David and the prophets. He believed that his Father would set up His kingdom in Jerusalem (Zion).

Hell is not what churches try to scare people with. There are three original words that were translated. Mostly it means the grave (Sheol and Hades). But the word everyone fixes on, Gehenna, refers to the place outside the walls of Jerusalem (in the Valley of Hinnon) where all the rubbish of the city was thrown and where they kept fires burning to get rid of it. It is said that sometimes dead bodies of criminals were sometimes thrown there. Jesus is just using the sights which the people around him knew. It is imagery that would make them think about the way they should behave toward God and their fellow man.

Jesus also taught about forgiveness of sins in baptism, immersion in water, and coming up to newness of life. If we will believe the offer of salvation is for all of us.

The Bible really does tell you everything you need to know, it also tells you if what you have been taught is not quite right. It is the word of God and offers salvation. Do read it, and don't be put off when you get to difficult bits. Pray about what you do and trust God.

Yes I agree it's a sad thing knowing that people are and will be in hell, but, the only thing we CAN do about that is to tell them about God, but don't try to force it on them by saying things like "You must be saved or you will go to hell!" or "If you don't believe in God you will perish!". That only makes them NOT want to follow God. Otherwise, the people who go to hell have taken themselves there. They chose not to believe in God, not to try to learn about Him, etc. But none of us know who is and who isn't is going to hell. But sometimes I wonder, "could I be happy in Heaven?", but as many people have told me, it's a place were we are bound to be happy no matter what. Heck we'll be with God! How can we not be happy? Nobody knows if we'll forget earth or what but I just wouldn't worry about it. :)

Edit: But I have been told that in Heaven, we should all be able to recognize each other. Whether or not that is true nobody knows, but that makes sense.

Yeah, just think about it. No fishing holes, no Nascar, no football or baseball or basketball games, no deer hunting or coon hunting, and the list keeps growing doesn't it?
