I bought 5 apples, 4 bananas and 4 pears with 5 dollars and they were at "reduced" price already. Why are them so expensive? Since they are essential for body health and people like them.

i know government doesn't sell food but something must be done; appeals by health institutions etc

or at least give me an explanation why they have such prices, why the meat is cheaper than fruits?

First of all, they're not that expensive. Bananas are .59 cents a pound.

But the government doesn't set the prices in this country. We live in America, for god's sake.

Because food like fruits and vegetables keep you healthy. And the healthier you are, the less money the government makes. I suggest you pick up the book Natural Cures They Don't Want You To Know About by Kevin Treadeau. It will help you to understand this concept better. It's not some conspiracy theory, it's the straight truth.

I would stick to fruits and veggies from a farmer's market or buy organically. Yes, you spend more money on healthy organic food, but you buy less because of its high quality and the supply of nutrients that you need otherwise lacking in most other foods. I would rather spend $30 more on healthy food than eating junk that I know will clog me, not cleanse me.

It's all about priorities!

Um, the government doesn't have anything to do with the price of fruit. Unless you are a dyed in the wool democrat and want the government to provide fruit subsidies to help us pay for them.

holy cow, most of you are completely clueless, do you really want the government to get involved with your lives right down to subsidizing certain foods for you to eat? do you want the government to start paying certain restaurants and things like that? we may as well go completely communist and have the government just own all the food producers in the country, then we can control prices

wow, the government should be less involved in our lives not more

Well, I am an American to get you started. The goverment doesn't raise the prices of fruits because Americans are pigs and anyway no one really eats anything healthy so what is the point of raising prices, you know. So if no one buys the fruits when the are cheap, why would the goverment raise the prices, you see, it would be totally pointless...

The gov't is about MAKING money, not saving money. The economy is about greed, not providing for it's citizens. It's cynical, but nowadays, people can barely afford to eat, let alone, eat healthy. This keeps the gov't running, b/c more people are sick and doctors and drug manufacturers can lobby representatives for what they want---to make more $$$... There's monopoly for the most part, meaning, if you really want something, you'll pay the asking price...without question. Good food is NOT cheap.

Because, unlike Europe, we tend to meddle in the market only when goods have a strong lobby and are addictive - like subsidising tobacco, etc.

Because governments are never that far sighted. They only think in terms of the next election.
It is an excellent idea.
