I heard that puppys/dogs with floppy ears are more prone to different types of ear infections including yeast infections. I completely understand this... but how do I prevent anything like this from happening? What are the precautions that I need to take?

My Border terrier is prone to ear infections, but I don't think it's due to his floppy ears. As long as I keep the ears clean and remove the excess hair, he does fairly well.

Usually ear infections can easily be cured by antibiotics prescribed from a vet. natural remedy: Vinegar diluted in an equal amount of water is a safe home remedy that can be used to remove excess debris from the ear. Put in a few drops and allow your dog to shake his head (which he will do). This will loosen the wax to a large extent. Then remove the debris with a cotton swab wrapped around your finger, pushing it as deep in the ear as you can. Repeat the process till the inside of the ear is clear. Don’t use vinegar if there are any open sores in the ear. A Garlic pod soaked overnight in Olive Oil works well in such cases. Remove the Garlic and put five to six drops in the ear, twice daily for 7 to 10 days. This will also help in refurbishing the animal’s Immune System. Once the ear infection is gone, you should be cleaning your dogs ears out at least once every two weeks.(once every week for chronic ear infections or if you see build up)

Our Dachshund had an issue of chronic ear infections some years ago. They were relentless and it took a long time to clear them up. The vet suggested to us that we should place a cottonball just in the ear (NOT deep, but enuf to hold) when we gave him a bath. This would prevent the water and moisture from getting down in the ear canal and the vet thought this was a contributing factor. So we've done it ever since and have had little issue with infections now.

Flop eared dogs are no more prone to ear infections then prick eared dogs unless they spend a lot of time in the water or are of a breed that has a lot of hair in the ear canal...Poodles are one such breed. Many people mistakenly believe that flops have more infections so they continuously clean them...over cleaning can cause infections as well. Another thing people need to be careful of what ear cleaners they use in addition to how much they use and how often they clean.

The key is keeping your dog's ears clean. Many commercially available ear washes and ear drying solutions can be purchased from PetStores, online, or from your vet. I clean my labs ears twice a week, more if she is swimming a good deal. From what I've read, it is not only dirt that is the problem, but also moisture that is trapped in the ear that leads to the infections.

I keep my dogs ears plucked ( the hair that grows in the ear)
I clean the ears every 2 weeks ( over cleaning can cause ear problems as well)
When giving a bath make sure the ears DO NOT get water in the ears.

Keep them clean and dry, some people safely tie their pets ears back a few hours a day ( a soft head band) so the ears can get some air, it's mainly breeds like Cockers who ears completely cover the ear canal.

what I do is buy a cheap pair of electric hair clippers and keep the hair around the ear canal clipped helps air circulation to keep it dry.Smell the ear canal if there is a pungent odor then its time to clean.Half alcohol and peroxide and cue tips.Be careful not to push and build up down the ear canal.Another tip is to keep dogs ear groomed. This helps take the weight off of the ears to help air flow.Any sign of infection please take him to vet.It can get out of hand fast.
